Adding to the TNP Catalog of reviewing the Ruger American series, here I add an update to more calibers and versions of the type. These are "review spoilers" ie guns that perform well at their low price points (most), which often embarrass the more "upscale" bolt action rimfires. Here I'll review the .17 HMR and .22 LR versions, discussing all the types as well.

The Standard and Compact versions should be your first choices but I'll show you others in action, some with good kills here in TNP (shown). Specialty versions shown as well, some cannot be found. But overall if you're looking for a 1st Cool .22 bolt action rifle that just performs without fanfare and hype, here it is.

What Could Go Wrong? Ruger American Rimfires

Great rifle! I love mine in stainless steel! Put a Timney trigger on it and a primary arms 22lr scope

Tacticaldoodle

I now recall there being a 22 m1 Garand people were excited for, that’s about the last time I got an enthusiastic shoulder bump over an upcoming rimfire piece. It’s a shame, they’re a great time, very fun things

Darrrn

Are we still waiting for the 22 ranger review? I never saw it.

Matt W Plank

Great vid, Nutn’! I got the RA in .556 about 6 months ago. It is not rimfire, but it’s awesome to have a bolt action.556. I will say, I usually am influenced by your reviews and put a great deal of trust in them. That said, you are at 90+% awesome. There have been a couple that sucked. Ah, but did they! Nah, probably it was just a case of the gun not interfacing with me. Two examples, the Kimber Evo was a mess. It shot okay, but just didn’t do it for me. Likewise, you are lukewarm on the Sig p320, and I use mine as a home defense option. The purpose of this observation is two-fold. One, you are evaluating a sample of one. It is possible that you got a bad sample and it is your data. On the other hand, some interface with a certain firearm better than others. For example, I learned on iron sights and don’t give a damn about bore axis. The trigger I happen to have (factory, sample of one) on my p320 is magic, for ME and I happen to shoot that pistol as well as anything I own. All that to say that you are a trusted go to for my purchases and your batting average is all star. At the same time there have been a few surprises; some for the better and some, not so much. Your videos are entertaining and educational. I express my appreciation!

I’m referring to the Christensen arms ranger 22. No I don’t own it but I traded riffles with a friend this summer for a month or two. I only put a few boxes though it. A box at targets and a box on varmints. I was really impressed. Surprised to hear you had accuracy problems. I was consistently getting one hole at 30 yards with cci mini mag. Never missed any varmint that I wasn’t at fault. I think everything was inside of 85 yards, buts that pretty typical.

The Nutnfancy Project

I will add that 97% of all TNPrs will not watch .22 reviews. It's been that way for over 16 yrs. They just want tactical rifles and predictions of modern civil war, unreal.

Darrrn

That doesn’t make sense. If you tell me you don’t love 22lr I question if you really like guns. I guess if I lived in a city I would probably feel differently but let’s not find out.

Yep, and we like the weather that way. Those that lean towards certain political philosophies generally get one good dose of it and leave lol. The wind is the main issue for most people. We are so used to it that DOT doesn't even turn on the wind warnings until we are hitting tropical storm speed winds and sustained winds of 80-100mph are not uncommon. Next is the almost complete lack of trees. Yes we have some but they are found in the mountains or along rivers because that is where we have enough water. We are also the only state that has recorded snow in every county in every month of the year. So a dry high plains desert with near constant high winds and can have winter weather any day of the year. One of the favorite past times around here is watching and laughing at the guys that believe all they need is what is in their pockets and a woobie to survive.

DudeDudeDude

Looking forward to this review. I have had an interest in these for a while.

Patrick Brichta

Could not a agree more, love mine, kiddo loves shooting it too!

Matt W Plank

Btw, I have owned 3 Kimber and they all sucked. Two 1911’s and the Evo. I don’t wish to offend any Kimber fans, but this further advances my point. I have had samples of guns which have a good reputation, yet I was 0/3. Go figure…

First, THANK YOU for reviewing modern .22LR bolt action rifles! I've been looking at the RA, the Tikka, and the CZ for a while now. This review really helps, and I can't wait to see the Ruger Precision and Tikka reviews. Second, everything you've said recently about guys shooting .22LR because it's cheap and available completely applies to me. Glad to be a patron and keep up the good work!

Hold Fast Joe

Dont get a ruger, if you attend any 22lr competition you'll have no chance. Go for a cz mtr of some variation (though avoid the at-one), or get the tikka. If you have a lot to spend the bergaras are very nice

Hold Fast Joe

I'll amend my response. I'm referring to a piece you'll be taking to competition. If it's for recreation fun or hunting, the ruger will rock! If you want to hit tiny dots at 50 yards in the wind, avoid it One more tip, if you get a cz mtr, tikka, bergara, please never fire copper jacket through it. Just stay with 40gr lead. Getting a high end plinker get sk, lapua, or maybe r50 ammo. It's more expensive but you will love the results

Hold Fast Joe

I have seen a lot of ruger americans and precisions show up at competitions. They work great, they don't fail. They don't place well, but they are fraction of the price of what they're up against. For the money they're great!

Hoben Spalding

Thanks for the advice. What's the issue with the At-One stock?

HappyFrancisMacomber

Maybe worth adding a few of these in .22 and .17HMR. I have the ruger 10/22 takedown highly modded favorite plunger so I added the CZ 457 lux for hunting and looks - it’s excellent, will hand it down.

BadgerTails

LOL< just as the excerpt has her queefing, one of my dogs squawked one out at same time; green fog in da office! Papoose! How about the Precision, 22WMR, with a TB?! Whoa!

Kenneth Herrera

Ruger American gen 2 review would be sweet

Hold Fast Joe

It isnt the stock, it just seems their bull barrel isnt as good as their other versions.

Casey Jones

I was gonna ask you Nutn if you’d review more of these and you did! A bunch of them! I’ve been wanting to get a .17hmr and was trying to decide btn the Ruger American Rims and the Bergara rimfire. This adds some cred to the Ruger option

Aceman1126

Love the PA 22 scope just wish they'd make one with an illuminated reticle. I have one on my 10/22 takedown and it's about the perfect size and magnification for my needs but that black reticle dissappears pretty easy in real world locations.

Big_Iron_Actual

I've had my .22lr Ruger American for a few years now, and it's my go to garden sniper. I might be in the minority here, but I prefer iron sights on bolt action rifles, and the American rimfire was the only 22 bolt action in the gun store with irons.

Willie Everett

I have wanted that long range target for a long time. I hope they are getting ready to do a gen2 re-release. This just makes me want to get one even more.

bugout

Love you nutn

BadgerTails

Huh? Sale not allowed in 10 States?! WTFBH is going on?

DudeDudeDude

I really liked those reviews as I have been going over reviews on the savage bolt guns including the old TNP reviews as I have been looking for a range day companion for my cz 455. Watching other reviews on the ruger American made me have that one on the short list but I do not think I could really trust all those reviews from the other channels that get their stuff on a pre release schedule. Nice to see the 2nd gen smith auto again.

BadgerTails

Nope, I prefer irons too, weight stays down and no fidgeting with $$$

Mike S

Was wondering when you were going to post a video about the other Ruger American Rimfire rifles after your original 22 Magnum RAR review way back. Just got a compact model earlier this summer and it's performed great so far. Mine really likes CCI Standard Velocity and Blazer 40 grain LRN.

Chris Fischer

Another competitive option is the savage 9317. I put a BSA sweet 17 on it and I can shoot dum dums at 100 yards all day long. Same hole groups every time. Its the most accurate gun i have ever shot in my life.

DudeDudeDude

TNP got my wallet for two purchases this month.

DudeDudeDude

Yeah I think I remember the 22 mag review. I have no legitimate POU for a 22 mag. I shoot over 10,000 rounds of 22 in a good year if I have time to get to the range. Mostly pistol shooting though. Always wanted a 17 HMR. Never owned one but every one of them I have shot were lasers.

DudeDudeDude

That is a shame. I have a large interest in 22s and really enjoy the reviews. I go through over 10,000 rounds on a good year when I feel like shooting instead of spending time with the Dillon. Because of bidenomics 22 cost less than a primer.

DudeDudeDude

I have had a few bad experiences with their 1911s but their revolvers straight up rock. Quite possible the best on the market that a common man can afford.

rodrigo prado

They do make one. Primary arms slx 1-6x SFP gen 3 illuminated acss reticle for like $200

kylenor

What great rifles! That long range target one looks sick!

JFire

Need to really consider getting any variant of this rifle…since you reviewed several I know I can buy with confidence

watchman5

I don't really understand the point of a .22 bolt action rimfire. Looks exhausting to shoot. Why not just stick with semi-auto? I guess the most obvious reason would be maybe accuracy and reliability. On a different note, I'd love to see a review on some lever action guns, Henry, Marlin, Winchester, .357, 22Mag, etc.

Bluegill097

Would you prefer a rim fire bolt action over a lever gun? I would be seriously conflicted if I could only purchase one or the other.

Mat

Would love a review of the Winchester Xpert

RafterW

Thanks for the video. I just purchased one and saved myself a bunch on glass by taking your advice and not going spendy.
