Here's a review of the US Army Sig XM7 and the Sig Spear LT MCX. Expect some rants. This Spear is an expensive tactical carbine option. Does it represent good value? Is it better than an AR15? Is it accurate? Did it survive the curse of the desert?

All this is covered along with a lot more in the warehouse in this new touchstone Nutnfancy GRV.

Looking forward to this one

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

LOL he does it in 3 minutes and I stay for the whole video. Also, hell no for 2800 dollars. I have 3 builds that will out shoot it and 1 that is definitely lighter. I'm not paying the SIG tax just like I wouldn't pay the COLT tax. It's a 1300 dollar gun and we all know it.

Moe Mansour

Nutn, would you like a Microtech Socom Bravo mini for review? Sorry, I know I'm always offering my junk for review. I can't help it. 😆

Moe Mansour

Or maybe TD for his channel

PeepsOnEaster

Lol- I designed this weapon system a long time ago, before I followed tnp. I have to say that after fifteen more years of experience, I completely agree with your criticisms, and I think this design is one of the worst failures of my career. Too late to turn the ship around now tho.

James Young

Army could have chosen something like the 6mm Arc (it's a slightly better 6.5 Grendel also built on the 220 russian case) with beefed up bolt and barrel extension to handle higher pressures. It would pin onto their existing M4 lowers, produces more energy than 5.56, and extends the range to 1,000 yards with less than half the recoil of 7.62x51. Can take 30 rd mags (though longer than 5.56) with the main downside being the round is a bit heavier than 5.56, but the rifle is the same weight as it's still an AR15 and not an AR10. 6mm Arc could possibly have replaced both 5.56 and 7.62x51 streamlining supply chains and making ammo sharing in squads easy.

Paul Heinrich

Oh man, if only the Russians had the Bradley Resistant shooting glasses! 🤣

Mattimus

Gotta say, I agree it’s too expensive for what you get. Especially in the 5.56 variety. Why buy another gun with a specialty round you can never afford to stock? Now the vortex scope with integrated range finding and other advanced features it’s supposed to pair with may be worth the hefty price when it releases.

Downtrodden

Before the flight suit fashion advice, I briefly questioned the style around the 11 minute mark but the beautiful stainless steel bracelet on that timepiece saved the entire ensemble.

Ben H.

$2800? Nope. Can buy a standard ar, optic, magazines and ammo for that price.

Thanks for the review Nutn. How about reviewing the PSA Jakl! That's interesting SCAR or ACR competitor. I'd like a Piston gun to suppress and am considering it.

Guy Actual

I would argue that the 6.8Fury was developed to fight U.S Citizen with Body Armor.

Guy Actual

And I say this because the 5.56 defeats russian body armor (Which is basically sheet rock, lol) and Chinese Body Armor.... When will we be shooting at that? Perhaps its to defeat OUR OWN BODY ARMOR THAT WE LEFT IN AFGHANISTAN!!!

Wyoming Homesteader

I understand that most people do not have jobs like mine and use different stick of measure than I do, but my job requires the first cool and to ignore the second. Having said that I take one look at systems like this and say no thanks. My go to duty rifles both 5.56 and .308 are both 6lb or less, MOA or less, and I spent less than $1k for each, not including the glass. So why would I look anything heavier, less accurate, and 3x or more the price?

Lynn E Fite, Col (r)

It’s all about who SIG donated political money to. Let’s see, target is 450 yards away.

Lynn E Fite, Col (r)

It all about money. Let’s see target the 450 yards away. Call the mortar platoon for fire support or CAS. You’re just wasting ammo trying to hit in combat conditions. Ask any solider what they would prefer; less ammo but long range or a lot of ammo for real shooting. Also long range would be best left to the squads DMR. I’ll stick with my FNAR for long shots and a M&P15. Save the money for other prep and med items

David Elkins

First things first. Every time you say a forward assist, on an AR pattern rifle, isn’t necessary you are just wrong. Now that’s out of the way. This sig in 5.56 is super overpriced for what it brings. A big no go for me. And the buttstock is garbage imo if it doesn’t telescope any. That’s pretty important for me for transitioning from prone to standing etc. The XM7 has some potential. The new cartridges are revolutionary imo. But they are a step up for certain pou. Long range and vs L4 rifle plates. With some room to improve further. Barrel swaps for different calibers holds some good potential for military armorers also. Having said all that. The M4 will continue to reign supreme in most theaters for our military imo. But the XM7 will allow some versatility for some theaters and mission sets. Not likely to ever fill any needs for me personally.

Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed it. The MCX is not my cup of tea for most of the reasons you discuss, including the teething issues, etc. But, I stayed to watch the whole review and was rewarded with your discussing the coveralls. I do love the astronaut blue NASA pattern.. Don’t forget the flash fire fold so you can yank down the sleeves from past your elbow when needed. Hope they become a repeat cast member. I love my CVC coveralls and still have several 27 years later.

The Nutnfancy Project

Thanks so much buddy, I do love do utility coveralls. You’ll see this blue set more frequently in the reviews, really fun to have it. Thanks for the support and watching the whole video.

The Nutnfancy Project

Really good point, I did not think about that but could be. But that being said why not just you 7.62 x 51, even more capability.

The Nutnfancy Project

Try to find someone here and pay Sean the house one and send it to Gunnies and I will review it, too expensive for me to buy from PSA directly. I would like to review it also.

The Nutnfancy Project

I agree on all accounts, of course. It’s just entirely too heavy with your rounds, they should’ve gone with the cases, ammunition replacement weapon if they wanted to see real improvements. They spent a lot of money and went nowhere.

Nick Clements

Hey Nutn! Great review, although too pricey for me. I agree with you, I probably most likely would never purchase one. I feel like there are better options that are more accurate and better value. Which brings me to my next point. You should try getting your hands on a PSA Jakl and do a review on one of those! Seems like a more cost effective alternative to the Sig. Awesome work, keep it up love the gun reviews!

The Nutnfancy Project

Glad I drew you in! Indeed, the skin is entirely too expensive to be a viable Tactical carbine. I do remain amazed at how many will pay the premium price for that silly military association.

PeepsOnEaster

We specced the call for prototypes with caseless in mind, but cased submissions kept winning all the legacy requirements like storage and environment like you alluded to. It's government. It has to work. Our in house developed prototypes that we showcased to potential performers used caseless and poly cases

The Nutnfancy Project

I agree. That ammunition will be very very expensive and for most Normal budgets impossible to stock up that in that particular caliber. But I’m also reviewing, of course the Spear MCX in more common calibers, a better gun, in my opinion.

Rick Grad

I really wanted one, but resisted the urge for about a year now. Glad I waited.

Adam

I own a sig m400 sdi It's The direct impingement version of the spear. To be honest I was kind of under impressed with it. Would I buy an MCX no. I have a much cheaper ar15 that can do the same thing the mcx can do.

Guy Actual

agreed that the 7.62x51 is more powerful load than the lower powered 6.8x51, but the 80k PSI 277Fury (Which is a 6.8x51) that will be readily available to our military members (And not us) will be pushing a 135gr load over 3000fps, which is the round meant to defeat armor. Match that with a tungsten core design similar to an 855a1 (With the arrow head penetrator) and its faster than than the 7.62x51. Not to mention that Sig will be offering a 7.62x51 Hybrid with a steel base that can push higher pressures than our standard 308s can achieve. (Granted both hybrid rounds will be barrel burners, lol)

David R

I grabbed one in x39 on a good discount. I like shooting it and find I can keep it on the low gas setting and recoils nice and light. After having it for about a year, I think this platform makes alot of sense in 8 inch 300BO. Reduces the wait, compact with the folding stock, supressor friendly, as a PDW, shorter ranges the accuracy is less of a concern. The negative is the price. I think back to the antifa riots and truck gun.

David R

I have made that same connection ;)

David R

Thanks for your efforts Nutn. Good stuff as always.

Tacticaldoodle

I have a weird relationship with these guns: On one hand they're cool looking, on another, they're damn heavy for what you get......well the actual specs aside I guess what I really dislike about the whole Spear contract is that there's no real reason to throw away the AR platform as America's rifle. Sure, armor, china, russia, blah blah blah, but the bureaucrats don't REALLY care about combat capability - What they hate is the AR being the preferred arm of the American patriot, and ridding their armed forces of it feels like an effort to shift away from us: No more economy of scale for 556 ammo, parts, & LBE. Not a cool development especially when you consider the ammunition benefits are somewhat slim considering the added cost. It's like they designed something to specifically de-fang 2A Americans: Expensive round, hard to reload, rare....it's DRM for our ammunition. The government doesn't worry about cost per round, but we sure do. But as for the gun itself: Pretty cool, a little hefty, doesn't break much new ground, but it looks nice enough.

J Ram

The flight suit rant brought soooo many memories!!!! Thanks for that and you're 100% right as usual!! I remember back in the 90's and they updated the flight suits to some other material and we had to order it a size larger to avoid the "gut outline" issue you mentioned! 😂

Hold Fast Joe

great observations! I've thought along the same lines, it does feel like a kick in the nuts and a stomp on the face

Hudson

If this is where SIG has a piston rifle in 2024, really makes you wonder what would’ve happened if Colt had their crap together 2003-2009 when developing the 6940P/901 and the M5 rifles. What a future we could’ve had!

Chris Kales

Thanks for the review, Nutn. Only MCX I would consider is the 6.75inch MCX Rattler LT in .300 black. I've got the 2nd cool itch for that gun and, thankfully, no money to buy it. Lol.

RandleL

It's just not worth the money IMHO, cannot justify it in my calculations...

Greg_F

The high pressure 6.8 is over $20 per round, thats what the government pays. Barrel life is 5k-10k with hp round. The 6.8 training round is basically the same as 308.

Josiah Pierce

long form is the BEST form!! keep the good times rollin nutn!

David Melton

Any plans to look at the Brn-180?

BadgerTails

LOGISTICS: your teams are stuck out in the field, run out of the HEAVY damn-near proprietary ammo. now what? PREDICTION: armorers will have spec reqs for 6mm ARC and 6.5 PRC uppers. Love my OLD SIG rifles and the P556, 1911s, 226s, etc.. Not sure where they are going here...not my circus, not my monkeys...Drive on, great vid! Yes, the Sports like 3-Gunners drove me towards the Colt CSR-15, made in their TX specialty house, light and accurate AF Wylde chambers. 3-gunners hauled em for their back ups OTR, THEN transitioned to them as their primary gun for the match. Adapt, overcome, next TnP patch *should* have a Barbie in it! Drive on!

Hold Fast Joe

I'll say one thing, for the price you do get a lot of nice features but that short barrel and 2.5moa accuracy? That's hard to accept. It does have a lot to offer that's nice, and I'm pretty sure it's chromed barrel so it'll survive salt water where the high end single cut barrels are not. So I guess it is a maybe! For $2k you can get a Krieger, Bartlein, or a Brux and expect sub MOA, get any trigger you desire and nice furniture. Worried about weight have that 18" fluted to shave off 6 ounces or so. Odds are high it'll be an amazing tack driver and if it isn't you're still going to get MOA at a minimum. It won't be super flashy painted up pretty, but if your hitting dimes at 100 yards do you care? But if I'm going to run it for months with little cleaning in bad weather, tromping through salt water and streams and stuff.. Perhaps I want the chromed barrel, I'm not sure!

Jay Wirth

Thanks! This really felt like a fun engaging video I can watch repeatedly! You did a great job! 👍 Is the industry even trying to innovate?

Syd Arthur

I have the 11.5 5.56 with a suppressor and a sba3 brace With the stock folded it can live in a backpack. Absolutely love it… I don’t get why someone would want a 16 inch piston gun… But for a shorty with a can it’s hard to beat the spear LT ( this is from a guy that used to shoot 416s a lot)

David Spinks

I bought a 16" 5.56 virtus upper, cuz it was a good deal. And I'd always been curious to experiment. Multiple people tried, and we couldn't even get a reliable zero at 25yds. Then I bought a used 5.56 barrel, either 11.5 or 12.5, same upper, and put on an sbr lower. This one actually zeroes out at 25yds, but certainly not one hole at that distance, even with 75 grn. Definitely not a super accurate platform IMHO. It's also just as gassy as an DI gun with a can, and I'm talking a .30cal can. The 16" was way too front/muzzle heavy, but again I'm talking virtus and not LT. My buddy's gen 1 mcx was/is definitely more accurate.

brice.c

thanks nutn. lol @ PSA compairison at the end, haha savage.

Aquanaut

More money less accuracy. Not seeing the value in this rifle. What does it do my m&p 15 0r 10 doesn't do for the extra cost?

hoplite ⚔️

Now I want a flight suit for all the pockets and the cool look! Does the sawtooth bezel on your fortis marine master catch on your sleeve and rotate out of position? Mine does and it bothers me. Love, love, love the look of it though, very masculine.

Jay

Just watched a TNP HK USP video. Nutnfancy starts off by trying to keep it to 10 minutes. I'm glad we evolved to the long format. Keep it coming...Maybe revisit the USP...Second cool factor.

John Mell

Love the videos long time listener...watcher? Always a calming voice in the storm that is Liberal media...
