Last night my tent blew over a cliff. That meant the ole two is one saying played out again. Sean had smartly brought a bigger tent (Grand Mesa, below) that fit us both. Winds were blowing 40mph off and on throughout the night. Well at least I have a good camp mattress and sleeping bag right? Nope. Here I do a quick 3 in 1 review of my sleeping materials and how only, again, KELTY came through with a TNP recommendation.

Wilderness Review Truth: EMS Bag, Nemo gear fails

This vid got me stoked! I can't wait to do some camping this year!

The big issue with those synthetic bags is that any air movement around them just sucks the heat out of the lofting. So even your tent fluttering around will make that bag cold AF.... i use a biv bag over my -20 c bag because it has the same issue... tent or no tent ... Your issue with the sleep matress is the exsact reason i never use an inflatable... i have folding thermarest that i use in all weather.. even down to -50C (back in my infantry days)

Mudtoa

It seems like all the inflatable pads end up failing at some point (not usually the first use though). I do not hear much about manufactures warranties anymore, a lifetime warranty sometime means the lifetime of the product or the company. I have had good warranty experiences with Thermarest and Big Agnes for their sleeping pads. The last warranty claim was for a 15 year old pad. It may be worth trying the warranty for Nemo.

I have a permanently bowed tent pole on my Kelty Grand Mesa 2 from some strong ass winds, but never had a tent blow off a cliff! Lol

Stuff happens. You can do everything right and things can still go to crap. Sorry to hear about the tent. Bummer on the Nemo mat and that expensive sleeping bag. Thanks for keeping it real.

I'm looking forward to this!

Most sleeping bags are not designed for us tall guys. We struggle to locate ones big enough for 2 of my 6'6 teenage boys. Everything is too short and too narrow.

People don’t realize how duking awful it is to be cold at night when camping… I’m going to try the outer bag method now.. 0 degree bag my a$$…

I have that air mattress and have had good luck with it. I also recently got the Theramrest Mondoking and it was great in subfreezing temps on a cot. Usually for an air mattress, I would be on the ground with close cell foam pad under it.

haha, this is the main reason we camp about once a year.

Join the zenbivy cult like me

I've bought big agnes, thermorest, and zenbivy sleeping pads I've only ever punched a hole in my thermorest in my kifaru sawtooth (a floor less shelter) otherwise I've had good luck with all of mine, usually you can hit it with some adhesive or superglue if they start to leak and it's good to go. Just fill it and spray it with soapy water to find the leak in the seams. My thermorest is probably 10 years old my big agnes is 6 and my zenbivy is brand new. My other two work fine the zenbivy is just lighter and warmer. I decided to upgrade my camping stuff this year and cut 3lbs off my back with all this super lightweight gear coming out.

I live in the desert so I get lots of flats. I use seamgrip to repair the cactus punctures when I get home. I will have to try the superglue in the field. DO you use the superglue as is or add something? How do you find the leak in the field? The warranty pad issues I was referring to were delamination, seam failures or valve failures.

Alex H

I've blown it up and submerged it in water to find leaks then ill use a marker and mark the pinhole. Be extremely careful putting super glue in a backpack always put it back in your backpack inside a ziplock bag. I've never cut the superglue with anything I've just done a small dot on the hole and let it dry.

If I'm camping and it's well below freezing. Im taking the weight and I'm using a wiggys hunter antarctic. I also have a few surplus MSS sleeping bags and they are warm as well . I use the surplus sleeping pads too and I like them. I use the folding thermarest and put the USGI inflatable one on top. If you have a vehicle it's no big deal. I don't play when it comes to sleep.

I have an EMS 40* bag. Camped with it in the summer with 65* overnight lows and still froze my @$$ off. Totally useless bag.
