This is an updated Nutnfancy review on the Japanese-made Howa Mini Action bolt gun, on loan from Gunnies (Orem, UT ,thanks boys). Chambered in what used to be the hotness, the 6.5 Grendel, it’s now a bit of a forgotten caliber. I ran 400 rounds through this one to see if the platform and round still have merit.

I did film a philosophy of use (POU) video on the Grendel previously, but it got toasted. Let me know if you want a re-shoot. The Howa Mini remains a competent, Remington 700-based rifle with great quality and updated chamberings.

This is a GRV (Gun Review Video) done in the field, raw and honest. You’ll hear my take on the rifle, see my preferred competitors, and get all the deets on SAWC, features, and real-world performance. A couple of quirks did dull my excitement a little but it's still a solid bolt gun. And of course, we’ll close with a hot chick and a glorious reminder of why the Spitfire remains one of the coolest fighters of all time. Classic TNP.

Howa Mini Action: She’s Japanese, Reliable, and Slightly Flawed (Rifle Too)

Ive owned a few. Great rifles. Both mibe were 7.62x39... one in a mdt chadis the other in the light stock... The 10rd mdt mags were a game changer, the factory 5round mags were... Meh. Looking forward to watching this tonight

The Nutnfancy Project

Thanks TNP, great to hear your input on it, I still love that caliber in a bolt gun too

TechNeck

I replaced it with a CZ trail... Howa out shoots it... However . The CZ takes bren2 mags, stnag 7.62x39 mags, is more compact and faster to run

I've had good results with the Howas over the years. I had one of the Grendels but wasn't overly impressed. Stay far away from the 22lr M1100. That thing should have been sponsored by Hefty, complete trash bags..

Great video as always. Loved the extra shooting footage and the spitfire. Who doesn't love sonya

You came to the same conclusion as me with the mag release, its actualy a reason i didnt want to hunt with it, i kept dropping the mag when it snagged my gear.. hit a branch... etc. I found the howa mini action in 7.62 was a 500m gun no issue (2/3 ipsc torso) , especially with "mexican match" ammo (cheap ammo like chincom/wolf: pull the projectiles ... and toss them.... then average the powder between 10 cases. Pull 100 cases and remeter the powder for the batch, seat better projectiles like SSTs

Loved the review. I just recently purchased a savage 110 tactical in 6mm creedmoor for long range use. Also, I think you’re spot on about the dumb decisions of the military. Proof being the new military rifles they are wanting to replace the M4 with. Obviously they don’t follow you or they would understand how not SAWC the rifle is. Thanks!

Haven't heard much about the Howas so it's cool to hear about them. Although a slight question- did Wyatt leave Gunnies? The YouTube description mentions that he 'is gone forever'.

Andrettski

Yep, planes, girls and guns. That'll do. I have a 6.5 CM Bergara that I got from Handgun Haven, strictly a bench gun. I need to stretch it out more.

Bryan Hufstedler

Awesome video . 6.5 Grendel is a pussy cat and fun to shoot. I have one in Ar platform also looking to purchase one in a bolt gun. One reason I enjoyed the video. I reload for mine so its a little cheaper to shoot so I can enjoy my "Gun Therapy" a little more.

Matthew Sinn

"Why do they call it a Spitfire?" -- "Because it spits fire...."

Tim Cartwright

Ive always liked 6.5 grendel. I built my AR in it. I needed a caliber that was legal to hunt deer with and the 6.5 120 grain was faster out of a 12" barrel than a 300 blackout 120 grain out of a 16" barrel. And yes i do want to see the 6.5 POU video please!!

Steve Feeser

Thanks!! I’ve looked at this rifle on line and like it. 6.5 Gren seems like a great caliber for what I do. Five round mags kinda suck.

Thanks Nutin! Lately I've been looking at the Howa 1500 super light in .308 16.25 in barrel. Thinking about getting the barrel and the Jtec Screech Owl chassis which takes the aics mags, and collapsible stock. Either way a 6 ish 7 ish pound gun with lpvo optic and a can.
