The Umpqua "Northfork" Chest Pack is a surprising crossover piece, sent in unsolicited by a viewer. We've covered chest packs many times here like the still-xlnt RIBZ front pack, video here https://youtu.be/QOaCzHmXw7c. I generally don't like a huge chest packs on me as they tend to get in the way but there are times when it makes sense and solves problems. Surprisingly this is intended for fly fisherman (images shown) and has specialized features for them like the net carrier on the back yoke. The Northfork CP then as we check it out is very high quality, thoughtful in design, comes in great colors, and possesses surprisingly versatility, especially if you turn it into a handgun carrier (discussed). It does need a mid-strap for stability but you can add such easily. Value is high for what it represents and it is highly rec'd in the end.

The Surprising Gun Pack: Umpqua "Northfork" Flyfishing Chest Pack

The Umpqua Northfork Chest Pack is a surprising crossover piece, originally sent in by a viewer and clearly designed first and foremost for serious fly fishermen, but its excellent materials, thoughtful construction, and spacious layout make it far more versatile than that mission suggests. Quality is outstanding for the price, the color choices look great without screaming “tactical,” and with a few simple modifications the generous main compartment can accommodate even a large handgun along with supporting gear. Organization is excellent, access is fast, and the overall design makes it useful for hiking, fishing, shooting, exploring, and general outdoor carry. My primary criticism is that it really needs a mid-body stabilization strap to prevent excessive movement during active use, but that's a fixable shortcoming. Overall, this is a high-quality, reasonably priced piece of outdoor gear that turned out to be far more useful than expected; a genuinely surprising item from a TNP viewer. Dang that is a cool pack I would use it for hunting primarily I think. Although I would have had to figure out a different way to carry my gun. I carry a scoped up 460 Smith in a chest rig. It's good deer medicine it's challenging but it puts meat in the freezer. And BTW I would totally be onboard with some fishing videos especially a zodiac fishing trip.

Big fan of Hill People Gear chest rigs, but this does look less tactical and cost less.

I think it is actually pronounced Louis-Ville like you said the first time. Louisville is in Kentucky. ;) Interesting. I don’t like chest packs generally. Like you said it’s too easy to over pack them and then they droop and are awkward. Like that this is not tactical and looks like great quality. I am definitely entering tactical burn out phase. 😆 Nice to have options.

Timely, I just started fly fishing a few days ago. And need some gear with room for a Shield.

I’d like to think that concealment in affordable, off the shelf items is a missing part of the market.

Would make a good bump in the night response throw on and go rig. And it doesnt look all tactical should the law be required to make an appearance.

Thanks Nutn! Great as usual.
