This might be considered the poor step child to the famous Mossberg 590 and 500 tactical shotgun lines. But is it? A long term donor asked if I could buy one and test it. So I did.

It's always a temptation to judge something soley on price. I have counseled against this in my many reviews here. This Maverick 88 is kind of like that.

I say "kind of" because in some ways, discussed here, it is a bit rough around the edges. But what's important?

This is: materials used, durability, function, firepower, and reliability. You'll see the 88 ticks off those boxes and you'll see that again Mossberg delivers an amazing value to the tactical shotgun market in some intriguing flavors. I'll make the case and show why the Mossberg 590 and 500 are also still Hall of Famers here as well.

BTW I feel you should stock up on food and fuel supplies now.

Miss the music compilations, would love to see them again.

I have one of these - been running it regularly for 7 years now, zero issues. Every once in awhile I’m tempted to pretty it up with some wood furniture But why? It works just fine and has done anything something hundreds of dollars above its price point can do. So over time I settled to just enjoy it for what it is - rugged, simple utility. Excellent excellent shotgun. I’d like it even more if someone would make a barrel for these long mag models that has a detachable choke so I can use it for turkeys

Nice shotgun similar to the Mossberg 500 Persuader 8-shot.

Wish I could afford to be cheap. Im just broke. I have to get as much value as I can out of a purchase.

Yes for music. Appreciate value gun reviews. A lot of Gtubers climb over each other to first review the latest, greatest and most expensive newly released gun and will always give it 5 stars so as not to offend the companies. It's like 80's gun mag reviews moved to Youtube lol.

I’ve been hoping to hear your perspective on this gun. Thanks for a fun video dude!

I owned two Maverick 88's, purchased when I was in college and starting out as a young father on a limited budget. They met my needs and my budget, and I had a lot of great outings with them. Eventually I got tired of being beat up by pumps, sold the Mavericks, and purchased Remington 1187s in 12 and 20 gauge. These days, being an empty nester with a bigger gun budget, I'm mainly running a Beretta 1301. I would totally recommend the Maverick 88 for anyone just getting started on building out a household gun battery on a limited budget. It will serve you well.

Been waiting on this review since the ‘Prepping on the Cheap: Guns!’ video. Was hoping to seen it included then, very glad you’re covering it now!

Omg I knew a guy like Dan. We are out at a company function. Everyone is buying rounds for the table. Cheapo who never buys rounds says he’s got next after we just got a fresh round. We are astonished and appreciative. VP shows up and offers to buy but we all have drinks. So he gives us all $20 for the round we have. Cheapo takes the money and conveniently has to leave before the next round. Dude’s wallet was tighter than a tick. Going to look into this one. I love the idea of shotgun but never had a need for one so never spent much time with them and thus don’t know what I like and and don’t. I can justify spending $250 to figure out what makes sense. Good vid. Too short. Not enough table tchotchkes. More EB. Love the service story. As my dad used to say, “so there I was!..”

Absolutely do some music comps it would be super funny to see you run and gun to Tarzan Boy lol. This would be an excellent truck gun or a hideaway gun. Something you could stash at your cabin or get away place. It's cheap enough that if something happened to it or got stolen you wouldn't be out a bunch of money.

Well done Nutn'. For a guy that already owns a good semi-auto shotgun, this gun is worth buying for the training value. Even for car guys... yes the auto is faster and is your go-to, but there is a reason the stick-shift still around. Is the experience you bring to the table that makes your reviews worth it.

I like my maverick 88 18.50” barrel had some failures to extract but it hasn’t seen maybe 100 shells, so probably need to mess with it more to slick it up.

Shot442

Love my Maverick 88s. In my experience, the smoothness of the actions vary a bit from one gun to another. I always put the hogue rubber over molded short LOP stock on them. Nutn, really miss the music in the vids.

Txgunner69

Yes please bring back the music compilations

Having gotten back into shotgun shooting lately, the timing of this video is perfect. Thanks for posting this!

The Gates Family

Okay but I mean my LGS has really nice USED pump shotguns with 18” barrels and screw-in chokes, and many with old-world quality for UNDER $200. Not every LGS will, but it’s something to consider as a competitive option.

Id love to see a cerakoted mossberg with the classic wood on it. DO A VANG COMP

Blow your strap off?! Better than blow your strap … uh, I’ll see myself out.

Squid556

Really wish more people would realize this was an option before buying turdkish shotguns. Rather see dollars stay here.

Bluegill097

The Mav was the first gun I ever bought. $180 dollars in 2009, after a thousand cycles watching TV the action is very smooth. Busted off my front bead when I was 21 trying to swap it out, had no idea what I was doing. She’s a keeper

Love boom stick videos

So I set out to find a Winchester 1300 per your recommendation Nutn. Came across 3 all in the same week.

Tacticaldoodle

Hey, it deserves wood. When it's longserving and you love it, it deserves an ensouling upgrade like that!

Aquanaut

I wasn't planning a shotgun purchase, however the socialists in my state have passed law adding more requirements for gun purchases beginning in May. Sooooo yep picking one up today. Went with the 7 plus one security. Total with a box of ammo is 279.00 out the door. Seems like a good choice for what realistically will spend 99.9999% of the time on standby.
