It was the star child of the gun industry, introduced with hype and big promises. All of the gun world seemed to embrace it without reservation. A bright future laid ahead. And then it died.

Being in the gun world since 1980 or so, I've seen this silly process happen over and over again. Not that the 6.8 SPC is silly, it isn't; it's quite capable. But many times gun guys will tear down, sell off their existing calibers because the gun press and sell-out guntubers tell them to. And then there's TNP. I never fully got on the 6.8 SPC bandwagon. It is indeed a great intermediate and close range cartridge, but as I'll say here, what advantages does/did it offer over our preferred 5.56mm?

In this video, made possible by paying members to Patreon.com/nutnfancy, I will give you some data and strong opinions. We'll look at 6.8 SPC, .300 Blackout, and even the M7/M8's 6.8x51mm loadings. You might be surprised at some of my conclusions. For instance I'll have criticism of the Army's much more ambitious 6.8×51mm approach.

But it's still crickets with 6.8 SPC . Does it really deserve to be mostly abandoned the way it has been? No. As you'll see from the data here, it is better than the .300 BO in many situations. I would like to see it revive and thrive once again.

I’m done with all the Me too rounds. Hey, do you have that gun and that caliber? Yeah, me too. Crazy how people jump around and all these new calibers coming out and everybody’s gotta have the latest and greatest when they couldn’t hit the ground that they fell. Why are they trying to shoot 500 yards to hunt something?

Have and always will be a 556 shooter. Everything else is a fade. Even 300 black out. I know better ballistics, etc. but falls outside of my PVR (price/value/relationship) in my real world shooting in the Texas hill country

Why would anybody go with 6.8 SPC when 6 ARC is available? 6 ARC is higher velocity (flatter trajectory), utilizes higher BC 6mm bullets of approximately the same grain weight as 6.8 SPC, and can reach out beyond 1,000 yards. 6.8 SPC is pointless today if you an AR-15 compatible cartridge with better performance than 5.56/.223.

Cool caliber, but I will probably never own one. Always comes down to value. Most guys can't afford to shoot 5.56 let alone 6.8SPC but if you can rock on. I do think that .300BLK is more usable in the real world which is why it gained so much traction. Hunting hogs for example within 100 yards which is realistic. The variety of loads. Optimal out of short barrels, plus suppression use. I will say I don't own that caliber either so take that for what you will. I just look at the market for .300BLK and the variety in guns which tells me they're selling. I love the feature length content Nutn!
