Surely this has got to be the best weapon light out there right? The internet in some corners says as much. I say define best. If you mean it has the best throw and ability to identify your communist chipmunks at distance then you'd be wrong. While super high quality and lightweight, the SureFire Scout Pro light is out of touch with current technology. Buy the Warrior X Turbo (below) if you want a light that gets this tech right. Don't get me wrong: inside of 50 yrs the Scout Pro can and will get it done. But as you'll see in this in field review, it washes out and fails for me beyond that distance. Video proof included!

this is the only thing i disagree with nutnfancy on! the sure fires i have are still working and the olights i have either tail switch wear out or they don’t charge properly! i like things that work for years! they may not be as bright as olight but i’m still a sure fire fan even i also prefer fenix lights more than my olights. the G2x are pretty solid i use a fury as a weapon light. most other things i am in agreement but not on the surefire lights sorry man!

Lon N

Amen on the Olight Warrior X Turbo. I have been rocking one on my primary AR for roughly 3-4 years. Just ask the local coyotes if it's safe to howl in the treeline 1/4 mile from my house. My cats are greatful for Olight.

Andrew Quinn

I’ve been most impressed by streamlight to date. I bought the stylus pro on nutn’s review years ago. It finally gave up the ghost after daily use for 8 years, not bad for $20 if you ask me. Also haven’t had any problems with my streamlight tlr hl on my glock 30 or my helmet at work (firefighter). Trying out the olight i3t to compare to the years of service by my stylus pro.

Joey

Always keeping it real! That’s why we love you! Thanks for the honest review

mb

need a light to CAN mount ( for any weapon light). as cool as the lateral look is from aft the suppressor from the light side, its got to impose a lot of shawdow defraction on the light quality down range...or liek you said have a mount that swings the light out a longer radius from the barrel center line..imo, but IDKsheet

Max Roberts

I agree it doesn’t have great throw and what not. I prefer the surefire scouts simply due to the mounting mechanism. I can’t find any other light that mounts as close to the rail.

Robert Avery

Love light reviews so thank you. Please consider reviewing some cloud defensive lights in the future. I own 2 and highly recommend.

Racing Psychosis

I know its not a popular opinion with you and most TNPers, but I have nothing but problems with Olights, they fail a lot for me, to the point I no longer buy anything from them. If I want some that is a tank and works, I'll buy a Surefire or Streamlight. The only Olight's I have left that have not failed are the little 3E EOS and one old Baton.

Hold Fast Joe

300 bucks and only good to 50 yards? Awful Sounds like they designed it to flood a room in close quarters instead of making it a thrower with a tight beam. Check out weltool w3 laser emitter light. It is incredible, but I don't know if it would be a good weapon light as I think since it's a laser it'll damage eye balls and you don't want to blind your buddy by accident. Despite that.. omg.. very cool

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

360 dollars? LOL I'll pass dude. The Olight is almost a 3rd of the price. And that thing doesn't focus on the target at all. I'll pick up an olight. JEEZ man.. 360 .. surefire really loves themselves

robert mccrory

i only buy stuff you suggest. 2 reasons i patreon you. to get good suggestions. and because you advocate for 2A

Hold Fast Joe

Follow up to this, weltool makes a weapon mounted LEP. I think you would be impressed

Outrider950

The only thing I like about my SF Pro is that it’s dual fuel and therefore compatible with my OKW heads. I really like that the SF footprint…other than the Pro is ubiquitous throughout the industry. So I guess there’s that.

RECALL

I have the Surefire XC-1, used to be on my G22. Thought it was exactly what I needed. Two things led me to take it off: the light failed due to the battery cap, surefire knew about the issue for 2 years before I called them about it. Yes customer service was good, but not great. I also had to go through that process TWICE, and on the second time I told the service guy "You know people rely their LIVES on these products right??" I expected more from the company, especially given their product's cost. Also the XC-1 is all flood light. Works in the home? Absolutely. Does it work in my 20-yard fence to fence backyard? Absolutely NOT. Couldn't see the fence across the yard on a clear night. This led me to go Streamlight TLR-1 HL: 1000 lumen with a better beam pattern for longer distances, at roughly half the cost of a Surefire X300.

Bernal

My baldr pro likes some guns and jumps off others. Yes. I tried fitting the provided spacers. My Streamlight Protac is kinda bulky and heavy, but very dependable. I only use the tail switch.

Patrick Richards

I think a cool future TNP patch idea would be the TNP owl swooping down and blasting a masked communist chipmunk with a Glock 40! (Or something like that)

Joshua Pulliam

All of my lights are Olight or Streamlight. I used to carry my Olight M2R daily and then my M1T. But I kept having an issue with them coming on in my pocket and draining the battery. The M2R is now my bedside light. I’ve carried my Streamlight ProTac 2L-X everyday for about a year and a half. It is dual fuel so I’m able to use my 18650 batteries in it. It isn’t as good as far as lumens or throw as my Olight, but I haven’t had it come on in my pocket once. These kind of reviews are why I really started liking TNP in the first place. Pushing back on the “tactical elitism.”

Brian Driver

Cool light Nutn, but there's no way in hell I'm shelling out $300+ for a flashlight.

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

he recommends an olight that is better than this junk for 1/3 the price :-) watch the video

Quentin moore

You made this video in the nick of time. I was starting to get sucked in to the operator elites advice. Thanks

Downtrodden

My 3 boys are getting Olights for their airsoft weapons at about the same price as this one light. If OL can pass their torture tests, it’ll work for our systems.

Thomas C Heston Jr

Great review, with good info. How about a review of ear protection?

Onewizeguy

Just used a pile of OP bucks and bought the m600 scout pro dual fuel with the Malkov head After going back and forth on price versus durability. Most of us probably have a huge pile of gear we either upgraded from or just didn’t love. I know we don’t always get what we pay for but I decided to buy once and hopefully only cry once. I will not be babying this thing so I’m hoping for the best.

Onewizeguy

Yes! Otto’s versus the Axil’s please

Jerome J

I just searched my past amazon orders for olight products and I scared myself, I should be a board member at this point. lol

Patrick Brichta

How many times have I told you, stop calling me Shirley...

Martin Miller

Got my first Surefire in the early 90’s. Used it over 15yrs on duty, almost all of it on night shift. It still works great. Just picked up the scout light for my beretta 1301.

John Wolsey

I'd like to see a Olight Sigurd review.

Caleb Gips

Hey nutn, any plans to check out the olight baton 3 pro max? They have a new magnesium version that is supposed to be lighter than the aluminum. Drops tomorrow I think at 8 ET. I think I’m going to pick one up…just thought you’d like to know given your penchant for lightness!

David Elkins

Another pro is made in the USA. But….it’s way overpriced. If I was primarily running nods at night I might choose it for weight. And I am sick and tired of Olight and their cheesy marketing. Pretty good quality from Chinese slave labor. But it’s Chinese slave labor giving them their price point.

Nathaniel J Krause

Surefire has a new scout that is supposed to be better for long distance throw. I think it’s a M640 turbo but it also cost more so it’s a hard sell for most of us peasants

Plumber Angelo

The price man, really dissuades people. I don’t mind paying for high quality items, but they have to perform at a high level. In this case, the flashlight may be tough, but does it do it’s main function at a high level (you know, lighting things)? Seems lacking especially for the price of admission! Great review Nutnfancy

colby ruiz

Why is it that every light on plight’s website advertises a maximum output with run time of less than 5 min followed by a dramatically reduced output? I have several of their lights for general purpose use but that’s a turn off to me for tactical use. Also seems like false advertising to me. Surefire is known to have flood lenses, if you really want to compare apples to apples look at something like the Arisaka or Modlite offerings based off 18650 power source

Joooosh

I was surprised that sure fire sells the cr123 body with the 1000 lumin head. The newer ones I've used run rechargable 18650s.

Robert Avery

How are you liking the 1301?

Rolf S

Agree with Colby above, checkout Modlite. Great build quality and outstanding lens/throw. They also clearly delineate which of their lights are for area vs throw. They are similar in price to Surefire and sadly Surefire recently bought the company but hasn’t ruined it yet.

maxmfs

I am a Surefire loyalist. I have tried (and use) other brands, but the weapon lights, flash lights, headlamps, etc. that i need to work no matter what are all Surefires. I’ve never had a single issue with any of my Surefire gear. Can’t say the same for Nitecore, etc. That being said, I buy all my personal Surefire gear on the secondary market, e.g., forums, etc., and avoid paying retail whenever I can.

Paul Tooley

I bought one of the dual fuel M600s when they were first released and was sadly disappointed in the throw. I have since replaced the head with a Modlite OKW and moved the original DF head onto my home defense rifle. One great thing about Surefire’s current dual fuel offerings is that the beam projects a wall of light at short range; perfect for home defense. Until Surefire can catch up to the current market of high candela, long throw beams; they will remain on my close quarters home defense guns.

Lee Harrell [W5GCF]

Operators are going to be big mad. I love my Surefire weapon lights and my Olight weapon lights. I use both and you are right, they are good for different POUs.

colby ruiz

Yeah of course, but does that mean you’re ok with only 2.5 min at the advertised output? And how long does the cell last when you have to recharge every time it gets below 90%? I’m just saying it’s some sketchy marketing, they actually make some pretty good lights

Martin Miller

So far, I’m loving it. I’ve only been able to shoot it at indoor ranges that don’t allow buckshot. Slugs run great, very manageable recoil.

Sully509

I recently was ready to buy one of these until I realized the lack of output. The olight offerings look like a great value. That being said I've had 3 of their handheld lights fail prematurely with no help from their customer service. From that experience I cant justify giving them any more money. I ended up going with a modlite legacy enhanced (LED-F) light head on an arisaka 600 series light body. It is the best of both worlds with high candela and still able to run cr123 batteries. I would be very interested to see your opinion on the modlite offerings, specifically the OKW.

Willie Everett

I think Surefire stands up to abuse better than the Olight. I have Olights and Powertac lights and I don't know if they would take the same abuse.

The Nutnfancy Project

THanks Plumber and I agree, very expensive for what you get...a 50 yd gun light, oooof!

TheOldShepherd

Every single olight I have ever had is not reliable. I have had at least 20. Recoil especially ruins them

Tim Jarvis

So am I the only guy that runs exclusively TLR 1 HLs for pistol and long gun? Just haven't found anything that works as well for my use. Yes I use pressure pad for long gun deployment.

RECALL

I'm debating between TLR-1 HL or the ProTac HL-X, any thoughts? Otherwise no, I'm so happy with my TLR-1 HL on the handgun that I'm considering it for rifle use in any currnet/future systems

Tim Jarvis

I haven't had one fail yet. Been using TLR 1 or HL version for years with zero failures. The long gun kit has a nice pressure pad that's momentary only which I think is way better than having to dick around with a pad to find the combination to turn it the hell off if it gets accidentally pressed.

RECALL

I agree, but I've never used pressure pads. Usually my thumb is right where I need it on the tailcap of the light anyhow so I run it like that. Nice to have options for the TLR-1 HL though, incase I do want to go that route!

Tim Jarvis

Dude, if you've never used a pressure pad I highly recommend it. I didn't think I needed one either until I tried it. It's like a bad lever or 45° safety switch. They aren't necessary but once you try it you'll never go back.
