Macie the Mountain Dog and I take a breather and break into the pack for ya'. This is a slimmed down, lighter weight load out...I've been famous for too much. But the the knee not doing great less weight is better! There's some basic outdoor items carried, a few redundant items (since the fanny pack came along too), and then the DSK. Much of this is shown in my DSK series: https://youtu.be/037xmJP0Agc and https://youtu.be/zuW1jdrMpjw. But the kit and requirements evolve constantly so here's where I was on this particular hike.

Woooo nice! Love the backpacking kit vids. I need to go back and watch the boot video.

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

Working now. I'll watch it later. Love to see you're still rocking the Redwing 50. I've been using one for years based off your videos....great pack.

On the topic of just being able to grab something and go - I'm a huge proponent of modular systems. The extra one or two oz weight for a small container for a subset of system components is well justified by being able to mix and match parts of common systems. Obviously a BOK for WROL would be self contained, but even within that single system context there's a lot to be said for being able to maintain modular subsystems independently - and you never have to worry about things just falling out onto the ground when you have to go digging. Good labels make good systems. As an example, my BOK consists of the following modular subsystem pouches/bags within a long-range camera hiking backpack. Pretty sure I've spent as much time finding appropriately sized pouches for each discrete modular system as I have on what they contain. Guns - one camera cube with rifle and pistol and ammo and mags and tools... Comms - radio and antenna, signal mirror, whistles, pen/paper, etc... Light - flashlights, batteries, chargers, accessories for signaling... Fire making - storm matches, trioxane, striker lighter with flints... Food/water - water bladder with hand pump filter, camp stove with canister, utensils, spices... Consumables - gorilla tape, electrical tape, zip ties, 200ft of paracord, sewing kit, aluminum foil, etc... And then in the pockets around the backpack are all the various tools (knives, saw, trowel, reflective vest, warm beanie hat, gloves, outdoor shell shirt and pants, etc.) Anything inside of that kit can be easily accessed quickly without fear of it all falling out into a mess, removed and cached, swapped, traded - and the whole ~40lb backpack is intended to be a modular part of the eventual full BOK with actual water and food and clothing and such.

I always have a mini light on my keys as well. If you get caught out in spring or fall with a dead light once you never forget it. You should look up the Canik SFT in Bomber Green. I want one.

Todd Strelka

I love the outdoor scenery in the mountains. Thanks for the info on the daypack contents. I'm glad I got out on some good bikes this year. Timpanogos Cave trail and tour was epic to share with my twin brother.

Chris carr

These are my favorite vids

I bought one of those REI fanny packs a few years ago when you reviewed that one... (Just like it) I carried it for the last few years while helping with my Kids Highschool bands during their competitions... Great way to keep my phone and few emergency repair items.. (Leatherman Rebar, Gorilla tape, zip ties, small boo boo kit.) I never liked having my phone in a pocked banging on my leg. Glad to see you and the puppers getting out.

JFire

Lesson learned, bring more water than you think. Got it! Thanks Nutn!

I love your backpacking and adventure videos, as well as your WRVs. Please keep them coming. Love the GRVs and KRVs too, but variety is good, and your variation helps distinguish you from other channels. I also love seeing Macie and watching your relationship with her. As a fellow outdoor dog owner, I really enjoy watching the two of you interact. We appreciate all the hard work you do! Keep up the good work!

J. Guitars

I’m just now getting into backpacking and hiking, love the timing on this vid

Mike S

I started doing hikes earlier this year with a hike in the Ozarks. Looking forward to doing longer hikes so I appreciate these kinds of videos.

Rocky Meredith

It really saddens me these aren't more popular, they're some of my favorites. I loved the ones you did WAY back in the day. Hopefully you keep 'em coming. As always, many thanks for all you do for us!!

ToddDavey

Nutn, I'm curious why you don't take along a SAM splint and some way to control massive bleeding, like a tourniquet or Combat Gauze?

Timothy Mayfield

65MN is comparable to 1075 carbon steel like Condor Knives make a lot of their knives out of.

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

I hiked to the top of the tallest mountain in Texas in April, the only thing in my bag was water and food and a first aid kit. The hike was 4.5 miles up to 8500 feet. SAWC freaking matters my ass was kicked when I got off that mountain. I drank all 4 liters of water I brought and it probably was not enough.

Patrick Brichta

Sawyer filters are great! Been using them for years. Just don't let them freeze.

Ol Retired Fed

Yea more backhoe videos! BTW enjoy the hiking while you can. One of these days the knees will be gone and the 4 wheeler or motorcycle will be your only back country access tool.

Jesse Sapp

What’s an elite donor ?

Great to see supreme vistas and cogent insight. Review and philosophy of day kit was enlightening and enjoyable. Thank you for continued effort and dedication.

Greg

Where do you get a usable, affordable, compass? Bought one off Amazon and returned the Chinese piece-of-junk the next day.

Dustin

Great watch and beautiful outdoors. Looked like a nice hike. Bummer the river/stream crossings were dry. Will need to pick up a slockmaster!
