Another by request bolt action rifle review...it's been a minute. This is a heavy "Precision" model wearing a chassis. TD is here with his B17 jacket and we ask him about his bombing runs again. This Axis is chambered for the .270 since Wyatt twisted my arm to get it in this odd caliber. Don't get me wrong: .270 is a great hunting round but it's expensive and not available in large FMJ quantities. We'll cover that too. Then we get down to the specifics on this 12 lb Savage and talk about how the company needs to get back to its high accuracy roots!

Right on, brother! Happy Friday!

Ok, ok. I just wanted to see you depart the monotony of 308W and 6.5Creedmoor. A lot of people out west want a lil better reach and performance than the staple calibers. And If you’re going to go to a Heavy barrel chassis gun let’s get that effective range met. Going to 300WinMag or 6.5PRC is much more expensive/limited ammo options. A guy can find lots of 270Win usually. Lately I’ve had a great time shooting the Franchi momentum bolt action in 270Win with a YankeeHill suppressor. Lots of fun long range shooting it at steel gongs. Reloading for 270Win is easy , cheap and fun.

David Gaines

Don’t care about the gun. I’m only here for the Nutn, TD banter.

I had been looking for a deer/hog rifle (I'm really not a hunter but have occasion to from time to time) when I was wandering through a gun show about a month ago and found a Winchester Model 70. They don't light those small town civic centers very well so when I saw .270 stamped on the barrel I thought "sure, that'll do." I got it home and was going through it when I found that the stamp actually says .270 WSM. NO BUENO. Rarer than hens teeth and averaging about $5 a round. It can with a pretty nice scope and it shoots great! At least the three rounds I saved up for ran good. Anyone want to buy a sweet rifle?

Mudtoa

My last savage did not have the accuracy I expected. My previous Savages were much more accurate. I do not know what changed, but something did!

Hold Fast Joe

After a year of bench rest and seeing people travel in RVs to play, I never saw a 270 on the line. I didn't know it was $50 a box, ouch If it was quarter moa accurate I could see the ammo cost be justified but it seems like one of those calibers that's staying around but I do not know why

Hold Fast Joe

I had an fvsr 22 I got forever ago and it was highly accurate but I killed it after years of playing 22 games and thousands rounds. Tried a new one last summer, glad I didn't buy it without testing it. Yikes.. got a Tikka instead

Good review, Nutn'. I agree with you whole heartedly. The entire concept doesn't make any sense. As always, you are definitely on point. Thank you.

Guys at 27:44, I had to stop the video from laughing so laugh I was waking up the family! taco coupons n box of shells

Seeker Keyl

Always a fun vid with TD

JFire

I feel your pain Nutn, I just bought a box of Hornady 30-30 for the same price last week.

Paul Griech

My Friend Ken haupricht could out shoot you both off hand on his worst day i have a 1000$ cash on it.

Paul Griech

that is upsetting to hear i knew some damn good long range shooters

Hugh Amlett

Love the bolt gun reviews! Howa 1500 barreled actions can be had from Brownells for not much $ and put in a lightweight chassis of your choice, I'd be interested to hear your take on them.

Casey Jones

.300winmag more available than .270? Where are you shopping? .270 is much more available than .300wm. Granted, since the scamdemic .270 availability has dropped, but it’s more plentiful, and cheaper, by like $20/box. Yeah that’s a shame the axis chassis did so poorly. I know a couple guys that have them, and they got good accuracy, particularly the 6.5cm. Agreed on the weight, total boat anchor. Expensive paper punch.

BadgerTails

Choppin chalupas with 'doodle!? YeeeeeHaawwwww! Wyatt, we NEEDS some Larry Mahans in 13EE, whatttayagot brother?! So, it *appears* Savage made a rifle that *LOOKS* like the latest rage in chassis builds from SIG or Christensen, but it's a boat anchor. TY for the honesty and good fun! Yup, we have a 900m target on our property and it's fun to challenge yourself, but I'd never try to take a deer at that range. DRIVE on TnPers!

Willie Everett

I was considering this chassis for my Ruger American. I have the magpul hunter stock currently but want a cheap option to make it a more comfortable long range tool.

Ian

My elk hunting buddy has killed more elk with his .270 than anyone I've met. I'm willing to wager more than anyone in the thread either.

Racing Psychosis

My dad has probably shot more whitetail with a .270 than anyone on here. He's been hunting with it for as long as I can remember and he's now 76 yrs old and still hunting. Its a great round.

Racing Psychosis

Yea their box prices seems extremely high compared to what I see around here.

Casey Jones

It’s my go to whitetail cartridge.

tim hanley

What are you paying for .270 WSM? I'll take any leads. .270 WIN isnt hard to come by, but the short magnum is fairly precious.

DudeDudeDude

Glad to see my favorite rifle cartridge. I handload and have not bought factory for years. I am surprised at the cost of ammunition as one of the positives of the 270 is that the ammo was among the cheapest of the full size cartridges. Also I think the POU for a rifle like this for most folks is to shoot only 3 shot groups at 100 yards so they can cherry-pick their targets for a sub moa group so they can post a picture on a forum.

LucNukem

The standard twist rate for .270 isn't suitable for the long, high bc bullets used in long range shooting these days. Some barrel manufacturers are starting to offer .270 in a twist rate better suited for long range, but the people who will pick those up over another established long range cartridge are probably few in number.

Hold Fast Joe

Thanks, great info! The bench games are certainly not the target audience. It's painful to see it costs $50 a box but better than not being around at all for the hunters that enjoy it

DudeDudeDude

I miss some macho man and slim Jim references.

Steve Feeser

I like bolt guns. I don’t have one yet. What are your thoughts on the Ruger American Ranch. I think I would take 5.56 over 300 blk. Also under consideration is the Ruger Predator in 308 or 6.5 creed. Thoughts??

Joshua Pulliam

I have a Remington 700 chambered in .270. I have taken many whitetail with it in the last 11 years or so. It is a great cartridge and my set up will shoot 1 MOA or less all day with whatever load I put in it. It’s honestly a bit overpowered for the ranges that I normally hunt here in the Ozarks. My shots are usually 100 yards and in. With the exception of the buck I took last year at 300. If I was shopping for a bolt gun in todays market I’d go with either 6.5 creed or .308 in a Ruger American.

Joshua Pulliam

I was surprised to see it in a “precision” rifle. It is a decent hunting load, but it seems like an odd choice for a precision rifle. Prices aren’t quite that bad here in SW Missouri. You can get some loads for $30 to $40 a box. But 3 or 4 years ago those loads would’ve only been $20.

Deon Lee

I deer hunted for years with a Remington 7600 270win with a Simmons scope 🤣. Killed a lot of deer and I still love the Remington 7600 7lbs came with the shorter 20” barrel pump action fed from a box mag.

Deon Lee

Wait a minute 500yards isn’t long range 🤣

Hold Fast Joe

I would say look hard at a Tikka first, or Bergara, I think both offer significant higher chance of getting a much more accurate barrel over a ruger

Porter3861

Dudes - great review and always enjoy when Capt Tactical Doodle, US Army Air Corps, joins you. Don't have a .270 in the stable and don't hunt anymore so probably won't get one. But man I enjoy your GRVs. Please keep up the awesome work.

Kirk Fickert

.270…you mean long action 6.5 Mememore?

Jbocajs .

You think .270 is an oddball? LOL. Try 25-06, (1 of my hunting calibers)

Jbocajs .

If you are getting a bolt gun, get a long action. Agreed with tikka, bergara or a sako

Darrrn

I like bolt gun reviews. How many fighting rifles do I need? I try not to go to far down the “what if” hole so bolt guns are something I can buy have fun with and use way less ammunition. I’m not saying I would buy this gun. I have heard good things about the Ruger precision riffle and it comes in cartridges that make sense. I’m not against 270. I have a 1950’s model 70 in 270, but I have no idea why it’s even offered in a long range platform.

Jesse (Sphinx)

270 is an odd choice in a chassis gun unless you have the twist rate for match bullets, and are handloading them. Friend of mine has a custom barreled 270 in an MDT that's 0.2 MOA. Talking 2-inch group at 1200 yards, verified hits in a group setting with multiple witnesses. That's a very custom gun though. Off-the-shelf 270 and factory ammo is a weird animal. 270 is extremely capable but requires some set up. 6.5 CM is way easier entry into the 1000-yard game. Those off-the-shelf guns have the right twist rate, and the factory ammo is meant for range. Cheaper to shoot too. S&B 140gr HPBT in 6.5 CM available for $1 a shot when you buy 200 at a time--then cheaper every time you reload.
