Reliable Vimeo, nothing beats that

J Singh

Also, imagine copyright claiming a commercial. Someone is doing free advertising for you, you should be paying them dammit!

Dennis Owens

I was surprised to have to hear about the horrific Super Bowl loss this Sunday, but less surprised than finding out Errol Morris did those commercials. It was as mind blowing as finding out I know hundreds of One Republic songs.

Jacob Sundstrom

i love finding out that kevin and i hate the same commercials for similar reasons

Dennis Owens

Hard agree with #1. A confusing and off-putting commercial.

Wally

the Danny Bundle Is Life ad is somehow even more full-circle, because Ted Lasso himself was *originally a commercial* too

Defunctland

Dang, forgot about that, should have mentioned that

Flando Maltrizian

I definitely don't disagree with your #1, but the first one that came to mind for me was the Google AI Fan Letter commercial. I mean, even if you had no ethical issues with AI, and your writing standards were so low that you thought it would do a good job, it's just not... the point... of a fan letter. I think a different AI commercial even clowned on them for it, that's when you know it's bad.

Dr. Chunk

The Chipotle plot twist was almost on the level of Shapeland

Isaac Napell

The tone of shock and betrayal in your voice when you found out Errol Morris was doing the Chipotle commercials had me going.

Rachel Rakov

This is a terrible comment and I apologize in advance, but #1 makes slightly more sense if you assume the wife character has gotten a clitoral hood piercing, in so far as the singular/plural element is concerned. But that doesn’t make the ad any better and also probably makes her an even worse mom? Maybe don’t tell your teenagers about your new genital piercings?

Isaac Napell

Sorry for the double comment but the Bosch commercial with Antonio Banderas during the Super Bowl was brutal, including a bizarrely resurrected Macho Man Randy Savage cameo.

Björn Hermans

As someone from the Netherlands, this was an *interesting* peek into the world of American commercials. Not that we don't have bad commercials over here (trust me: we have more than plenty). And I loved your rising disgruntledness as you moved up the list :-)

Sharada

Kevin, I hate to break it to you, but I think #1 is supposed to be about pegging. The singular and the 'press the button' makes most sense with some form of dildo lol

Defunctland

I understand, others have brought this up, but the focus on him holding it is what made me think of something to do with something new on her. Also, at the point that a mainstream iPhone commercial is about pegging, it at least proves why it should be my #1.

Ryan Eldridge-Burch

I know you are super busy and would probably never do it, but I think you could make some amazing sports related content. As someone who is really into sports but doesn’t really vibe with the traditional bro-y nature of its external mouth pieces, your style would be much appreciated.

Rachel Chabot

I wanna let you know that I joined for patreon specifically for this video, and I was specifically hoping that my least favorite commercial was on the list, and it is your #1 worst and I feel so validated.

Moonie Bonzo

As a person who doesn't have ads on YouTube or any streaming services, plus no cable/regular tv, I have literally zero patience for ads. Watching this reminded me of how difficult it was to watch the Olympics because of the ads.

Blizzard Wuffy

This was perfect Patreon content, I really enjoyed it a lot. I agree with all of these, SUCH annoying ads during sports right now it drives me crazy. I've started actively muting when commercials come on, I used to just let it ride but now so many commercials are about weird obscure medical conditions and I can't take it anymore.

Brie Brown

Great video! I believe Bella Ramsey uses they/them pronouns-if you are able to make an edit or note.

Kathryn Brennan

This was great! Honestly any long “ramble style” video from you is my fave stuff to watch

Keeganners

Worse comersial 👍

Fury Haddock

This is the stuff i pay for! I loved this!

Diamond

fuck it we bundle

CurlyBoiCyrus

Joined your Patreon specifically for this video, and I just have to add my most hated ad this year. I saw the wicked movie like 3 times because I’m a theatre kid and good GOD that one google AI ad where they had the AI sing wicked songs made me want to walk out of the theatre before the show even STARTED

Defunctland

I somehow missed this one, and I'm glad.

Joel Eblin

Here's the main problem with those Salesforce ads, neither of those businesses would use Salesforce. Those businesses are too small the be consider a Small to Medium Business. This is a tool for a Customer Service rep who has over 200 accounts, and before they have their quarterly/yearly check-in, they get a summary where it says what their previous issues were and maybe even what they bought the service for. But that would require to actually put good notes into Salesforce, which I know from first hand experience, is impossible to make sales/customer service reps to do.

Michael Rydzinski

The Errol Morris bit you posted, the Chipotle shit, was so funny I had to come over. $2 for 2 hours of commercial hatred?! I fucking loathe commercials so Im strapped in. Thank you for this, incredible dedication.

Nic Freiri

Can’t believe I just watched two hours of commercials…

James Ribe

Maybe State Farm’s “Patrick Mahomes” character will get his own spin-off show some day

Jomaster the Second

I miss 70s and 80s commercials, where some random force of nature would pull a family out of a car while screaming and making them play Pole Position for the Atari.

Elizabeth

Idk if anyone will see this but I am an elementary school teacher and I can confirm that kids sing the off-key Burger King song.

Carriwitchety

There is another horrible Apple AI commercial about a hateful mother who resents that her daughters found meaningful gifts to give their father on his birthday, which she seems to have forgotten. So, she quickly has Apple AI put together some shitty slideshow that phones have been doing long before the AI boom and shoehorns herself into their moment, ruining it, and walks off like she’s some great hero looking very punchably smug.

Bigg

So... I could be completely wrong here, but the Burger King commercials sound like they were directly inspired by Wesley Willis' songs. For context, Willis was an "underground" musician from the 80s and 90s famous for songs that are mostly just a single absurd line repeated multiple times off key, and over time they became memes - you may be familiar with "I Whupped Spider-Man's Ass" or "Rock N' Roll McDonalds." Again, I don't know Crown at all, but it sure feels like he's intentionally channeling Willis in his BK songs. The thing is...Willis was officially diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and was also homeless for a while, by all accounts he had a pretty rough life. His songs were less self-aware jokes as one may assume and more just him rambling whatever he was thinking at the time, and there's still debate to this day as to whether fans of Willis who went to his shows were laughing with him or at him (I imagine it was a mix of both, honestly). Because of that, a brand as big as Burger King co-opting Willis' style to sell burgers just comes off as remarkably shitty and tasteless to me. Willis even had a BK song! Ironically it's one where he roasts the hell out of them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGXHsxqQEwU

Magical Girl Mel

Want those liberty ads to be even worse? If I recall correctly, the location they are supposedly in isn’t even possible as a pier since the Statue of Liberty faces out towards the water (since she is welcoming the boats in). To have her at that angle in the background, all these ads would need to be on a ferry or other boat in the water, not a pier.

James

Wow, so glad I pay so i don't have to watch commercials anymore.

Gigi

that apple emoji ad played for like a month straight before every YouTube video i watched and it made me want to kms absolutely haunting

Marrim

thank you for your service in telling us this 🥲

Sorry I taught you splendor duel wrong

Hi! I had several unsolicited thoughts! I joined based off of your youtube preview because I loved the passion you had in noticing and critiquing the details and cohesiveness of the ads. I would never have thought of or noticed these things but I absolutely agree, truly a banger video. I do not want to sully your enjoyment of the delivery room advertisement, but it does bother me that the later reverse shots of the son from behind the wife do not include the husband's arm on his wife's shoulder. I suppose on the flip side that could imply that the choice was entirely the actor's in the moment, which is perhaps better. Please preface this with the same disclaimers as you had when discussing it, but I think the final ad is meant to imply that the wife has gotten a new strap on of some sort, I guess electronic somehow. I think this is why the husband's lines include the implication of begging and 'getting to touch it'. It would also explain why it is singular and might glow. This doesn't improve the ad at all, and the dialogue still only kind of applies, but at least it makes a bit more sense with this assumption.

Diamond

I, like another commenter, read the innuendo in the Apple commercial as being an adult toy. But! I think the commercial could have been saved if the daughter stormed in the room like "You got the new iPhone 16 and didn't tell me!" Kind of subverting the creepy weirdness by her, a teenager (who we all know love iPhones), actually being disgusted that her parents secretly having the latest gadget that her and her brother wanted.

monstershaped

Doing my part for the cause by commenting "anyone else here from the Defunctland Patreon?" on episodes of My Kitchen Rules.

Sara King

That was a master class in over thinking things that were never intended to be thought about that hard. I salute you. Also, the slightly off singing and general vibe of the OG Burger King jingle feels like it might be at least sonically inspired by Biz Markie's Just a Friend, but whether that was intentional or by accident I can't say. Either way the jingle is stuck in my head now.

Sunny Pallister

hi, i also joined from the chipotle ad preview on youtube! i thought the same thing with the last apple one. i think the bad, disjointed dialogue is supposed to be alluding to the innuendo that they have some sort of new sex toy, likely a strap-on

Naope

On the topic of outrage over SNL being taken off the air (were that to happen): I think only the elite of the entertainment industry would be baffled or taken aback. Regular audiences would have seen it coming

RKD | Tori

I ended up joining the Patreon because of the public cut of this video (Chipotle documentary ads) and honestly, I can't wait to watch the full thing as well as other things on the Patreon.

Sara Gonzalez

Don't worry Matthew, your latino cred was confirmed and validated with the use of the El Chavo theme song. No further information is needed.

Rebecca Richards

"Florida, where I'm living..." Oh no, Kevin... I'm so sorry.

Alyssa S.

Dibs on "Loose-Leaf Chicken Thighs" as a band name.

Lindsey Keefer

I love the deep dives into each commercial. 7th world war is a wildddd name! My least favorite commercial has been that Trivago ad where they all have veneers

Gigglebyte

God I love a deep dive

Brody Gustafson

I too hated the Liberty insurance commercial with the wax figure. I hated the frisbee one though because who is throwing a frisbee on a pier like that. And then multiple frisbees coming from the same direction? Also it doesn’t look like a frisbee but looks like a lid of some sort.

Maddie Oleszczak

Still working my way through the video as I can. First, THANK YOU for calling out how terribly they butchered the concept of "Jake from State Farm." I hate those commercials so much. But yeah, I'm still sort of confused by what you didn't like about #10. It was too good at making you want McDonald's? Also, I can't tell if you're being genuine or trolling when you keep calling the Geico gecko a lizard.

Space

Releasing a snippet publicly was genius because i don't think id be able to sleep without getting all of this

ilikecheese

whopper whopper ad took me back to when the dolphins game would cut to a commercial break because of another tua sustained concussion. thanks kevin, took me out of the offseason for a second

Tessa & Maarten

I came here to say this, too, but I did a quick check and apparently they're okay with whatever pronouns. They said they/them feels most right to them, but that they really don't mind and they don't want it to be a big deal. So referring to them as she is perfectly fine.

Sabi Sgambi

Me at first: aw man, I can’t wait to catch up on all the Patreon videos now that I’m a patron! Me, 45 minutes in and just now seeing the full run time: dear lord help me

Jenny Maurer

Admittedly I just joined for a month for this video . I’m a big fan of advertisement talk with a favorite podcast of mine being after these messages

Jenny Maurer

Nah apparently it’s based on a 70s Burger King jingle

Jenny Maurer

P.s. Errol Morris has been good but between the Elizabeth holmes documentary and the chipotle ad, he has really fallen down these past 10 years

Ellen Kaluza

I hate this video because the Whopper song just blares in my head for days afterwards, but also I can't stop watching it.

William Komocsar

Yeah, I was gonna say, it seemed like vibrator was implied. It glow, buttons, I wanna feel this again and again, can I hold it As for the daughter listening… perversion? Idk.

Kevin Snipes

I joined your patreon to watch this video, I loved it. I really liked the more casual off the cuff tone, and every single one of these ads hurt my eyeballs to have to watch. the sound of them incites rage within me

Paul Baeza

Another small bit about the football-futbol commercial that annoys me is that Mahomes says “Do you kick it or pass it?” As if passing isn’t something you also do with a soccer ball. It should be, “do you kick it or throw it?” Which is funny because it seems like Kevin assumed that that’s what the line was when he’s recalling this because it makes more sense.

Liza

I think ironically why the Domingo character got so famous is because his part is so short. It was the perfect length to be shared on short media platforms like Instagram Reels and TikTok.

Lindsey Keefer

I just saw a new version of the State Farm thing that makes even less sense, where a bowler is bundling?? two pins together?? By hitting them with the ball??

Leah Jarvis

The Liberty Mutual “Bibberty” commercial (baby in the carriage with the same bad-actor guy maybe?????? idk?) trading pronunciations of Liberty. I see it like 4x/day and it’s HORRENDOUS.

Soap

please do more of these i love tearing commercials apart

Tamara Gear

Catching up on patreon content and the best I can say about this video is "omg Kevin watches MKR!" Little slice of Oz with my favourite documentary dude. Nice!

Nemii

No Kevin, not football 🥲

Sam

They are still playing the Chipotle ads where I live but they are in Spainch and play every 30 minutes.

Roseleaf Comics

The hot take on SNL feels a bit out of touch. I love Bill Hader, but I don't think the average person knows who he is, or they confuse him with Wil Forte. Also that cast with Amy, Will, Bill, Jason, Andy, Kristen were there for like 8-10 years of people complaining about these nobodies. Later they started getting movie roles before leaving. We are already seeing the same path for current members Bowen, Chloe, and Marcello.

Defunctland

I will double down on what I said in this video and strongly disagree that it is out of touch. Wasn’t trying to be controversial, but I think the difference in success is measurably different though. It’s not just about individual talent, it’s about an entire ecosystem of media no longer existing. Decentralization of media has affected every institution, especially something like SNL. Jason Sudeikis, to pick a random example, was fronting comedy movies while on the show that were pulling hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. And this was consistent with an entire cast, not just an exception like it is now, Pete Davidson then Bowen. That’s not to say people don’t like it now, but that doesn’t happen anymore. It’s a different world. Its ratings have dropped significantly, which is not unique to SNL, but it is very real and affects its hold on cultural conscious and ability to produce stars (and attract talent). Also side note, I’d argue that Bill Hader is well known. Barry was a massive hit for HBO.

Roseleaf Comics

I'll def agree on the decentralization. SNL has really lost a massive advantage. Something newsworthy happens, and you wait to see that SNL's take on it is going to be. Today something newsworthy happens, and I've already seem 30 jokes about it by lunch. By the time Saturday comes anything SNL does it going to feel tired and dated. And their numbers are going to suffer. The more I look at the list of SNL people, the more it looks like it's the determination and success of the person and not SNL. The show did nothing to help Robert Downey Jr, Tim Robinson, Janeane Garofalo, Laurie Metcalf, Sarah Silverman, Jenny Slate, or about 12 others I could list. I'll say it gave them friends and connections, but it wasn't what they did on the show. And there are a ton of people on for 5-6 years who were amazing on the show, but their career basically ends when they leave the show. SNL didn't do anything long term for them either, even if they gave them a movie. The show gave Bill Hader a megaphone, but his drive to be apart of everything is what makes him successful. He is successful. Barry is amazing. My non-media obsessed friends and family do not know who he is, but they know Jason Sudeikis and Kristin Wiig. I think Bill happens to be more niche. But I'll circle back around to agree about attracting talent and the cultural hold. If that was the path I wanted to take, I have about as good of a chance of going to audition for SNL to be a star as I do by making my own opportunities elsewhere. The motivation for people to desire to be on SNL has shrunk.

Jac Schaefer

I work at a record store and my coworker will often play the BK whopper song in the middle of the music. Its like a sleeper agent switch to hear it now.

Jac Schaefer

you made the sleeper agent winter soldier joke after i typed this i did not steal the joke

Zeb11

Having completed the rest of your back catalog, I’m now here to watch the bonus content as well. I know I’m late to the party, and while all of this was fantastic, I keep thinking about the salesforce/agentforce ads that they’re trying to expand their customer base into different fields (but more like selling snuggies to non wheel chair users because it benefits them, not because they actually need them) and also doing an appalling job of demonstrating how their ai will do a good job of “statistically tracking and analyzing preference or sales data” to help make targeted ads, cater to preferences, etc. Using a local craft store owner who I know is too small to be a target audience as an example, it felt like they were trying to show (in a very divorced way) how often someone comes, what they tend to buy, what you might want to advertise to them or let them know about, etc. - in our local craft store, she’s learned she needs to always go live when she gets in new yarn bags and nearly always sells out. But when you scale that business up, so to scales up the customer base and the likelihood that she would actually have a direct understanding of what each or even clusters of customers were doing. Right now she can tell you most folks in the shop’s favorite color is purple, with green and blue close behind, but if the shop had 200 regular customers instead of 50, and so on, that’s where the data collection becomes more nebulous. And while it can be tracked using spreadsheets (I know, I live in spreadsheets for a living), there are folks who will either prefer to have the guesswork taken out or who may struggle to have the data reduced to a manageable point for them - and as I said, I don’t think the commercial adequately conveyed statistical tracking in that regard. Regardless, fantastic work as always, and please forgive my late night ramblings

Spiciest

Both Jakes from State Farm play straight men, though. I agree that New Jake isn't funny. But Old Jake was also the straight man in his sketches. The absurd comedy came from the actor and Old Jake simply responded to the wife about his attire.

Danielle Schatten

the only good legacy the BK Whopper commercials had were when one of the SiIvaGunner remix videos autotuned them to One Winged Angel

Danielle Schatten

...uhhh even if Bill Hader somehow doesn't pass your litmus test if you can find a single American over 18 who does not know who Andy Samberg or Kristen Wiig are I will venmo you 25 cents meanwhile the most notable unknown actor of the last five years on SNL played Wario and was better known for his later work lmao

Roseleaf Comics

It was just specifically Bill Hader. Talented successful actor. I personally wouldn't call him a star. Andy, Kristin, Amy etc id absolutely agree with.

AK Barratt

Rewatching this one again and realized I never added the Chloe Fineman context I know. Prior even to being known for doing celebrity impressions on IG, she was a frequent contributor on web based comedy channel SuperDeluxe (which was often bizarre, avant garde, and sadly now defunct). That was the earliest version I saw of her "eastern European" characters. Ooli the bjork-esque childrens show host I never saw outside of IG but she does seem to have some fondness for that character. The character she did for SuperDeluxe, I forget the name since they've scrubbed all the videos, but she was a recurring character of a young woman in Hollywood with a vibe that could be described as "euro trash" trying to live glamorously above her means. I think Fineman is actually hilarious and have been happy to see her success however... I just think her content is too weird for mainstream. I get that there's probably not much money in YouTube sketch comedy but she worked so much much better in that format and have no doubts trying to squeeze that into whatever modern SNL demands is a challenge. But your instinct was correct, these ARE characters she's been work shipping for the better part of a decade. I doubt advertisers expected anybody to know that but it kinda seems like, inexplicably, they did.

Rivers Gambrell

What’s the over/under on us getting a 2025 version of this masterpiece? I want to make a Post Malone size bet.

Robbie S

1. I feel so seen by BK being on here. Still being used in 2025 and just the other day I yelled because I was so sick of it 2. The legality of advertising sports betting has been getting to me too. The fact that now I see ads for betting "ON ANYTHING" is insane to me like they're not even masking that they just want you addicted to gambling itself. They used to pretend that gambling was a sport like poker, now it's just "hey you can literally bet on the weather, give us money idiot." 3. The fact you thought of "boob job" instead of "vibrator/similar sex toy" for the last commercial baffles me, actually. It seemed pretty obvious, and made it even WORSE with implications of kids listening.

Ross Regan

This video is the reason i paid for patreon access

Katelyn Amato

This is the first time seeing the salesforce ads and i’m genuinely so confused on what they are even trying to advertise like what am i supposed to be buying? common sense?

kenna a

the liberty mutual bit is so funny but i have fondness for wax figure man.. he's so of his time. the worst liberty mutual ad was the fucked up musical theatre/open mic night one where they're singing the jingle and it goes "liberty-ty-ty" off key at the end into a record scratch. that one made me suicidal

Liza

starting a petition for a 2025 version who is with me!?

Krab

Listen I just became a member here today, but I absolutely would just watch a series of Kevin judging ads. I really hope there will be a 2025 version at some point! Also love how well articulated all these points are, the one about gambling/betting apps especially has really good arguments about how they portray their services and that there needs to be some kind of rules on them. I admittedly don't watch a lot of sports or stuff that has the same ads of them, so the talk of these random athletes or sports related people who I have never heard of is funny (very glad for the extra clarification that Andrew Webworth or whoever is NOT famous) I also weirdly think the idea of Suburban Dad with the Wax Figure, even if it ended the same way for the 'figure melts' kind of thing- like 'hey kids look what I got!' and then when they run out its melting and looks horrifying. I was going to mention what is one of my least favourite commercials, to the point where my Dad called me into the living room one day to show me it and go 'isnt that just terrible??' but then it ended up being covered in #1, the Apple Intelligence crud. I really don't get the idea in commercials why you would want to make 'big dumb lazy character who doesnt deserve to be where they are' the Good Guy who uses your product.

Velocipastor

rewatching this in the hopes of getting a 2025 version sometime soon bc it's absolute gold lmao. My personal conspiracy theory about the AI bedroom ad is that the writers intended the kids to be a lot younger. If the kids were like <10 it would make way more sense for them to be sneaking out past their bedtime, being curious about what their parents do, and not immediately understanding/being disgusted by the obvious innuendos. I believe someone further down the chain thought the joke of "children hearing things that sound sexual" was too potentially offensive, but the final script had already been paid for so they just aged the children up so much that no one could possibly be offended by them encountering something sexual. Unfortunately the children are still WRITTEN like they're 10 so it turns the intended scenario of "adorable young kids are confused by something that would sound sexual to an adult" into "teenagers who are old enough to know what sex is continue to listen to what they 100% think is their parents having sex."

the robins wayne

haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but bella ramsey is actually nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns and have said that they actually aren’t comfortable with fem terms like actress being used for them.

Karina

As a bassist you are right that bass riff is awful what the hell was that

Bioscotto

I was today years old when I learned where the name Limu Emu came from…..worth the Patreon charge for sure!

Angelica Nyneave

My husband and I always will quote the chipotle ad and say “you’re making me hungry!” And “and you make it fresh.. every day” all the time because of this video!! I love this video, I always come back to it

glovetheglove

So the big takeaway from the commercials in this video is: Treating the audience like they're stupid (while also being stupid yourself) is one of the worst and most infuriating things you can do

Kiers

I’ll say it since you didn’t, I don’t like the way it sounds like Matthew is saying “Asian force”

aisterion

post malone is a notorious gambler lol. a friend of my mom's who won the lottery went to a casino in downtown detroit the night before he was set to play at little caesars arena, and met him at the high rollers table. she saw all his face tats and told him "you'll regret those". beasted on him lmao

Sorchy Studios

I apologize for my crudeness, but when I hear the Apple commercial, I think dildo. The daughter thinks the mother is gifting a dildo to the father. It feels new, he wants to hold it, and it glows. It's so stupid.

Frank

No one cares anymore, but what has always bothered me about the Liberty Mutual commercials is that that location simply does not exist. Are they supposed to be on an anchored ferry? The closest similar view is from Governer's Island, but the statue would be like half the size and positioned a different way. Okay done, thanks.

Kiers

I love rewatching these, seriously I would watch a monthly roundup of these. I also want to add that I also love the Mayhem mascot. I think he does something so unique too where he’s not necessarily making fun of people. When he says something like “I’m a teenage girl who just got her license” and smashes into your car while texting LOL OMG, it’s almost implying that a supernatural entity took over their body. Like, the message is not that bad drivers are everywhere so you need insurance, but that the malevolent force of Mayhem may occasionally take over peoples bodies, and that’s what our insurance is for.
