Kevin and Jack desperately try to make the founder of Publix, whose name is almost certainly not John Publix, fit into their rogue's gallery of Walt Disney types.

Literally my first childhood memory of being in Publix circa 1995 is seeing the portrait of him hung in every store and saying “Walt Disney!” And he’s haunted me since

I need to know if these biographers know each other. Like they all share the stories and promise to just change the words around a little

“Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and grocery shopping” - John Publix

ybor is pronounced e-bore and it’s a gem! highly recommend if you’re ever in the tampa area, lots of great bars and restaurants and free-roaming chickens

From now on I will proclaim “Behold the food palace!” whenever I go into Publix for fried chicken and iced tea.

Wait till you hear about the Damoula’s of Market Basket up here in New England!

I don't know what grocery stores would have to become in order to merit a complete rebranding of the concept, but I'm certain it would be a dystopian hellscape. We're talking organ barter markets, class-limited shopping quotas, plain-clothes security and drone surveillance. True cyberpunk nonsense. In other words, whatever Bezos makes Whole Foods in about five years, if he gets his way. "Every dollar you spend at the Whole Foods survival warehouse on 32nd will send another clone of my wife to space! And this weekend only, we're offering double food quotas in return for fresh organs, donated straight to the ruling class transplant reserve!"

shout out to Harris-Teeter! fun fact here in NC (and surrounding areas) we've had Ingles forever as our main grocery store, and there was an informal agreement between the founders of Ingles and Publix (who were friends) to not build within the others' key states (the Carolinas and Florida respectively), but now we have Publixes here because those founders are both dead. My Floridian mother was, and still is, ecstatic about this.

Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh anyone?

Hen House, Price Chopper, Hy-Vee - just missing Constantino's and Apple Market.
