Sometimes when your body grows quickly your skin can't quite keep up (for example, on someone's belly during pregnancy) and you end up with scar-like spaces where the skin was stretched out. Both the marks and the pains were caused by the rapid growth, but the marks wouldn't necessarily have been linked directly to the pain.
