On this week's Illicit History, Michael gives an overview of the rise of the socialist and anti-imperial Michael Manley in Jamaice, and the reaction by  both gangs in Jamaica, the right's Edward Seaga, and global capitalism's enforcers, including potentially the CIA.

Hey I just became a patron and can't access the illicit history episode. Can somebody help?

So good to hear Michael Manley again; I visited Jamaica while Manley was Prime Minister. The everyday people we met (we stayed where locals stayed, not in big hotels) were very astute politically, enthusiastic, and rightfully critical of US intervention. We learned to call Edward Seaga "CIA-ga".

It was an incredible experience. This was back in 1978, I think. There were cheapo vacation packages from NYC to Negril Beach. We rented a car, nearly drove off cliffs on narrow winding roads, steering wheel on the other side of the car. *Anyone* driving was expected to pick up people walking on the roads; not to do so marked you as a typical arrogant tourist. One old gentleman we picked up would have been perceived in NYC as a broken down bum; he proceeded to give us a very sophisticated lecture on the politics and economics of US imperialism bearing down on Jamaica. Another day, we naively thought it was ok to do a money exchange with some dude on the street, who promised he'd be "right back" with more dollars for our signed American Express checks than what the official exchange places were offering. An elderly unassuming looking bystander laughed and jeered at our outrage at not seeing the guy return; she said "serves you right; those black market money exchanges hurt the economy for the rest of us - stop dealing with these parasites and go to the government regulated exchange place!".

Loved this episode and am excited to explore this fascinating history even further and for your future episodes related to this! Also, recently pledged and can't seem to access the Discord chat and would love to. Great work as always Michael!
