Bill Fletcher Jr. (@BillFletcherJr) joins us once again to discuss Jesse Jackson’s 1988 campaign for presidency. What Jesse Jackson’s 1988 campaign meant for the left, from a symbolic candidacy vs. ‘running to win’ campaign. The class components of the Rainbow Coalition. What Jackson had going on top of his charisma as far as his appeal to everyday and oppressed people. How Jesse Jackson used class understanding to educate and unify workers of different races without sacrificing matters of racial justice and internationalism. The problem with charismatic leaders in the absence of organization.

Awesome -- really excited to listen to this, thanks.

I love this illicit history so much. Definitely one of my top faves. Bill is a wonderful guest as usual and I really liked both the Bernie speech at the beginning and the Jackson speech at the end. This makes me interested to learn more about Jackson since I was too young at the time but if he ran today with that enthusiasm I would vote for him even though I'm not very into the whole pastor voice thing. Thank you.

This is so awesome Michael. I remember Jesse's campaign VERY well. We really did believe he could win. STILL waiting for the first black president.
