Co-hosts of the 'Struggle Session' podcast (@StruggleSesh) Leslie Lee III (@LeslieLeeIII) and Jonathan Daniel Brown join Michael to discuss the recent history of politics and videogames. The early 90s bipartisan panic about videogames and attempts at censorship. How corporate consolidation has made gaming worse. How cynical corporate wokeness has been used to excuse poor games and leads gamers to reactionary views.

I’m gonna be super disappointed if there’s no mention of the “Postal” series in this ep.

Really enlightening discussion; great point about gamers growing up to despise people like HRC. Why wouldn't they?

Hey Michael and Crew. I know you've spoken about the primary in Illinois's 3rd District (Newman v. Lipinski) on here and on the Majority Report. Tonight they had a candidate forum, and I was able to attend. They had to open a second room. Highlights: Newman supports Medicaid for all, legalizing marijuana, Planned Parenthood, the Equal Rights Amendment. Lipinski called a clean DREAM act a "magical fantasy," said talking about eliminating the Electoral College was a waste of time, claimed Civil Rights protections for LGBTQI individuals shouldn't apply to religious organizations, and when asked how he would reduce the number of unsafe abortions performed in the country, he said strengthening the economy will help stop women from seeking abortions for financial reasons, and then cited his support for Crisis Pregnancy Centers as being pro-women. Personal highlights for me were the hecklers listing his corporate and GOP PAC donors as they calmly escorted themselves from the debate, the moderator threatening to kick people out if they kept applauding for Newman, the older gentleman beside me who called Lipinski an "asshole" under his breath, and that they asked one of the questions I submitted. I asked them to describe a time they changed their mind on a deeply held belief, and what criteria they used to make that decision. Lipinski gave a worthwhile answer about recognizing that hate crime legislation for crimes against LGBTQ individuals was necessary to combat the intimidation such crimes perpetrate against communities. Newman used her minute to lay into him about his voting record against Marriage Equality and for religious exemptions to equal rights legislation. He came back during a later question to misrepresent what she said as an attack on "religious freedom," and she hit him with his record of voting against abortion rights, equal rights, LGBTQ rights, workers's rights, (et al.) and called him out for presenting himself as a champion for these communities. I'm not sure if it'll translate to the election, but people were openly laughing at Lipinski.

Thank you for sharing this, kyle!!

I appreciated this greatly, the guests here understand the situation very well. You *can* draw lines directly through controversial events in gaming into portions of the right that we see today. You can't use them as an exclusive way to posit where/why these groups came from, but you can use these events to understand undercurrents to the insurrection we've been witnessing.

Also important to point out that the tumblr-feminists making noise during GG exaggerated/lied about the level of harassment they were receiving. It was basically one giant grift where you sell a ridiculous story about code red levels of harassment and sexism existing all across gaming (silly when you think about it). A bunch of dumb libs fell hook line and sink for the damsel in distress trick, ironically enough coming from a feminist whose supposed to be against that trope.

Late response I know, but if I were teaching a course on how gamer culture has evolved to the point where it is vulnerable to being duped by the right, my course material would be this episode and Champagne Sharks episodes 38 and 40 about "Postmodern Geekdom as Simulated Ethnicity"

As an old guy who has yet to master Tetris (my old version with music is very relaxing but doesn't seem to work with anything higher than W2K), I enjoyed the interview. However, where all this is going reminds me of the disturbing SyFy series Caprica that was on a few years ago.
