Hey Michael and Crew. I wanted to send an update from the Illinois 3rd district. Dan Lipinski has been blocking constituents who post comments on his official facebook page questioning his policy positions, asking about connections between himself and the PACs that are releasing attack ads, and noting that he takes months to respond to attempts to contact him. I believe I've been personally blocked, as I can no longer comment or "like" anything on his page. I've been contacted by other users who have found themselves either blocked or had their comments deleted. I'm not a lawyer, but I found some articles on a case (Davison v Loudoun County Board of Supervisors) that found government officials blocking constituents' access to official social media pages violates the first amendment, even if there are other means of contacting the official. More generally, a North Carolina based PAC (United for Progress Inc) has been releasing attack ads over the past two weeks which are carefully phrased to imply Marie Newman was involved in defrauding people out of their mortgages. In reality, she invested in a restaurant with a guy who had been convicted of a felony, and served his time, years earlier. She was apparently not aware of this when they entered their business agreement. And, today, news broke of constituents receiving text messages implying Marie Newman is a holocaust denier. They're being sent by the "No Labels Group" which has ties to United for Progress Inc and the Problem Solvers Caucus, of which Lipinski is a member. The text references the March 20th Primary, and then notes Lipinski's "opponent" is a holocaust denier. My assumption is they'll claim they meant Arthur Jones (the likely Republican candidate). Unfortunately for them, a message to another constituent went off brand, and they used the phrase "did you know she is a holocaust denier?" and then included a worried face emoji. Lipinski has apparently been out of reach for comment. I reached out to the paper to see if they can get a comment on him blocking facebook users, so I'm hoping to learn more soon.
