I would love to hear more from Luke Mayfield about the non-fundamentalist Sufi-like versions of Christianity. He made a down payment on that project by substituting the concept of God as an cranky old bearded Abrahamic patriarch with a long list of taboos enforced by a punitive, and judgmental religious community. Luke offered a liberal Protestant icon of God as a transcendent omnipresent spirit of love imbued with limitless power that is given flesh by our good actions, participating in the shared spiritual and social ritual of gathering together every week to celebrate and discern the meaning of the our place and role in the eternal cycle of annual liturgy.

What I hate about the New Atheists is that they will not abandon their convenient straw man: the cartoon parody of the most degraded and backwards versions of a theologically delegitimated version of our own Wahabist Christian Right debasement of the tradition. No actual living person at the St. Leo’s parish, white or brown, believes any of that heterodox nonsense. No one even thinks about any of Sam Harris’ thought experiments. The Catholic Church (trigger warning) is a vast global culture that is fully adaptated to assimilating and incorporating the local customs and prior pagan religion customs. The old gods would always reappear as characters in the Christian narrative rewrite. There’s a reason this organization has lasted over two millennia. It provides a very valuable social function for the adherents by mixing all social classes under one roof. Think about this: where else in American society do Anglos and Latinos mix together volitionally without getting all liberal and annoyingly woke? We are know the liturgical drill, all have equal claim to be there together and it’s no big deal. Conventional lay Catholicism is not about theology or textual argument. It is about having well-tested communal rituals for the basic stages of human life: birth, puberty, marriage, and death. Guys like Harris refuse to honestly asses actual religious practice as opposed to his delusional cartoon version. He needs to be demoted as a cultural influencer.

Tom Perez actually did win a couple county council races in the Beltway. He attempted to run for a state AG race in Maryland in 2006, but was disqualified because he failed to meet an eligibility requirement (e.g. 10 years of legal practice in the state prior to running -- he only had 5 years). Doesn't change the fundamental point. He's a technocrat, not an activist. His only election wins were in a DC suburb. His one run for a state race he botched. It also looks like he took a pass on the MD gubernatorial race in 2018 -- a state with one of the largest Democratic partisan leans in the country -- because he didn't think he could unseat a fairly popular GOP incumbent.
