Machiavelli is one of the best known political thinkers and also one of the most misunderstood. Because of the popular use of his name he is thought of as the prophet of the wicked and the cruel. But Machiavelli's contributions to political thought are much richer than he gets credit for in the public imagination. In many ways he was the first thinker of the 'political,' he presented politics in a way that was not diluted by abstract concepts and idealism but by the material workings of power. To change the world we must see it clearly, Machiavelli can help us take the first step.
This week I have posted a short video introduction to Machiavelli's thought. For those who are already familiar with Machiavelli I highly suggest Louis Althusser's short work Machiavelli and Us. This work outlines a more radical reading of Machiavelli's thought, especially his contributions to the concept of "the people." I also found this lecture on YouTube that seems to be mostly inspired by Althusser's reading of Machiavelli (apologies in advance for the quality).
