Thanks for sharing this Michael. I'm the primary caregiver for my girlfriend who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) five years ago. She's in hospice care now; is fully paralyzed and can only move her eyes. We have NYS Medicaid designated home care workers 24/7. It's been eye-opening on so many levels: what it means to have a "social safety net," watching a huge corp. deny benefits due to pre-existing conditions (diagnosed before Obamacare,) constant battles with medicare, medicaid etc. I still hear right-wing family members says things like "healthcare is a responsibility, not a right." They have no idea until something like this happens to them...

Yes I've seen how difficult it is for the home care workers we have. They're all immigrant women and often have to commute several hours to get to a twelve hour shift. At least where we are in Brooklyn, there are very few American born workers willing to do it. We've had some issues but for the most part, they're all genuinely caring people. Nobody wants strangers coming in and out of their home non-stop but as a silver lining, I've seen firsthand how human decency is a universal trait.
