Michael Brooks, you unpacked a bit of a premise I have heard you make without qualification on other episodes: ‘having a billionaire class is inherently problematic.’ The first time I heard you state that as if it were a Newtonian law that is self-evident, I thought ‘that dude really does live a Brooklyn lefty bubble.’ I live in Northern California, where the politicians range from liberal to soft democratic socialist, and I’ve never heard that point made in any political discourse that was in print. You need to make that case more fully and regularly to make it as obvious as you think it is. That is not accepted lore outside of a few zip codes.

Andrew Moses

I woulda thought that the inherently problematic nature of a Billionaire Class was self-evident. Put very simply - the median wealth of a US citizen is approximately $45,000, so to be a member of the Billionaire Class your wealth must be at least 22,222 times the size of the middle placed citizen. At present, the US political system, both by design and through supreme court decisions, is increasingly characterised by it's breataking ability to transform economic power into political power, and herein lies the problem. If a democratic society is predicated on the equal distribution of political power, at least in theory, and we hold these democratic ideals to be of primary importance, then we would have to conclude that the existence of a Billionaire Class is in fact anathema to any real notion of democracy.

David Blobaum

We could also conclude it to be detrimental to the concept of a republic since we now seem to have an auction house or protection racket instead of actual law makers that represent constituents, as well as central banks owning the executive branch, and a (not so)Supreme Court full of corporate lawyers that all went to the same schools and get life time appointments via the finance industry. The vast majority of citizens are no longer represented. This would still be true despite a 99% voter turn out election cycle.
