If the goal is to change the direction of the country, you need to build organizational power outside of political parties first. The Koch Bros and their allies didn't take over the GOP by taking over the RNC. They built a parallel organizational structure in the form of Americans For Prosperity as well as a host of other organizations. They trained and supported a generation of activists and ran those activists in elections. The GOP is dependent on them and their network now, not the other way around. Even now, the Kochs aren't limiting themselves to influencing the GOP. They've cultivated relationships inside the Democratic Party as well (opportunistic alliances on energy policy and immigration). The decline of organized labor is an illustration of what happens when an organizational network becomes dependent on a single political party. The most effective issue advocacy organizations and lobbies, also don't limit themselves to a single political party. They exert pressure on both major parties. Thought that Seth Ackerman's "Blueprint for a New Party" in Jacobin offered one of the most compelling arguments for the way forward. I don't think Bernie joining the party is what matters. The value of his legacy is the way he built his political career. His political legacy right now is in the independent organizations that have emerged in the wake of the 2016 campaign. Agree with the view that Sanders would have probably hurt his "brand" by becoming a full-time Democrat.
