Mehrsa Baradaran, author of "The Color of Money: Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap," joins us to discuss redlining and  wider problems with racism and finance in America. How do we assess the New Deal in terms of race and class knowing what we know now.  What would a successful reparations process look like?

Being from another country I had not really cottoned onto the real horrors and atrocities of "red lining" until now. So thanks very much for this post. I saw some effects of structural segregation when I was working in Gainesville FL, when we were scouting around for a cheap apartment to rent I felt I had been transported at times into an America of the past pre-Civil Rights era. The segregation continued in other ways, like seeing students at the university sitting in distinctly different coloured groups. Over a decade later, and living far away from the USA, I still blink in disbelief at the memory, and wonder if it was real or in my dreams.
