Poet, teacher and host of Zero Books' Symptomatic Redness podcast C. Derick Varn (@Skepoet)  joins us this week to for a wide-ranging strategy on the left.  What can (and can't) Tony Blair, Nas, and Noam Chomsky teach the left about being strategic. How to balance idealism and maximalist goals and external forces of power opposed to such measures, such as the ANC in South Africa and Pink Tide governments in Latin America. Voluntarism and economism on the left.

Great episode on strategic thinking. Value for money. Have him on again soon.

Awesome to see Varn on the show! Symptomatic redness is a great podcast. Thanks Michael!

Great conversation, though I wish it could have been longer. I'd like to see Varn on TMBS. Also hoping you'll have Jesse Vega-Frey on your show soon. I'm seriously looking forward to that one.

Besides 48 laws of power and revolutionary strategy. What the other book Varn recommended?

With love and respect to the show, to be honest, I didn't feel like I understood a particularly clear definition of strategy coming from this discussion. Folks like Bill Fletcher, Joshua Kahn, John Matthew Smucker, Jane McAlevey, Mariame Kaba all use pretty precise definitions of strategy that allow for much clearer discussion of what makes for strong strategy, and how actual political organizations use and misuse their resources. Among other things, a lot of the examples cited in the show seemed to me to center around framing, narrative and discourse, despite the fact that, as Varn mentioned, 'moving the overton window' *isn't a strategy*. Would be great for this conversation to be followed up with any of the strategists above, or someone else who talks about political struggle that's grounded in more than discourse.

Enjoy this conversation. a recurring segment on strategy would be cool on the show. "how fascism works" by Jason Stanley Is also a good book.
