Thanks for putting the spotlight on the need for public houising! Here in Denmark, where 20% of the entire population lives in collectively run non-profit social housing, we're in the middle of fighting and organising against an unprecedented attack on our homes. In europe, like in the states, the debate about public housing has been increasingly racialized. Because public housing serves as the only entrance for immigrants into the housing market, the already toxic debate on immigration serves as an easy entrance point for the right wing government to appropriate and marketize our homes. In short, it has put in place laws, that officially label areas as ghettos on the basis of the number of residents with "non-western" ancestry (over 50%), who are unemployed (over 40%), formerly convicted (over 3 times the national average), uneducated (over 60%), low income (less than 55% of the regional average, which of course is higher in the big cities). If an area is labeled as a ghetto for more than three years, the state will force the non-profit housing organization to reduce the number of homes in the area by 60%, either by sale or demolition. These new disgusting race- and class laws, as they rightfully should be called, have support all the way from the social democrats, that are fighting voter flight, to the right wing extremists in the parliament. The Danish elections are taking place within two months. Hopefully we can mobilize and change the government, but since the social democrats are in on the deal, the future looks darks for a more fair and humane housing situation in Denmark and Europe in general. There's an unholy alliance between free market and anti-immigrant interests, that can't and shouldn't be underestimated in wellfare state Scandinavia, which succesfully has managed to undo and undermine key hard fought achievements of the working class movements from the last hundred years. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Copenhagen.
