Hey Patrons,

Michael, David (@DavidGriscom) and Matt (@MattLech) sit down for another edition of Think Tank, this time about what "revolution" could look like in America and how best to address whatever "normies" are.

I'm reading "Days of Rage" by bryan burrough. It's all about the leftist underground movement in the US in the late-60's/early-70s from Weather Underground to Black Liberation Army, and at the same time, I'm reading a bunch of writing from the early German Social Democratic Party. It's very interesting to read these together, as you see how all the same debates keep recurring on the left of whether to engage in the political process or abandon it as hopeless and to go all in on revolutionary struggle. Both groups at both times also discuss things they think are definitely just about to happen that didn't actually happen. In turn of the century Germany, it was the immanent collapse of capitalism, and in the 70's underground, it was the imminent collapse of US empire. A show on this comparison would be a good topic, I think

Thanks for the recommendations, and good comparison, I second this as good topic for show. Especially the risk of assuming collapse and why that way of thinking takes root.

I can't wait to listen to this one! But I have a general question that is unrelated to this episode. Does most of the discussion of patrons happen on Discord? I downloaded the App, but can't figure out how to connect my TMBS patreon privileges. Also, is there a Slack channel? Any help getting these connected would be much appreciated.

I can never get enough of this topic- many of my close friends are relatively apolitical, or grasp onto the performative aspects of the new FoTM candidates, but at their core are still resonate with the same issues that drive Bernie's campaign. Connecting those dots with them can be a struggle sometimes but I think one worth making

I had to laugh at the fact that you don't meet many Republicans. I live in rural Texas and encounter them all the time. At the same time, I've also had many discussions with them just by asking questions and listening to them and maybe planting a seed of discourse if I can. Of course, I don't engage with anyone who is a staunch Trump supporter, I just don't have the bandwidth or ability to talk to them. They're probably the most authoritarian and subsequently, have been controlled by fear-mongering, segment of the population. It will take a lot to overcome that if it's even possible.
