Soviet Union lost 28 million people in WW2. So to say their flawed brand of pseudo-socialism failed there because of politics is a bit like saying Fiji failed to win the rugby world cup because they wear the wrong jerseys.

To Ashley, the caller wanting to combat right wing xenophobia and nationalist extremism: I'd say largely ignore them and focus on building a stronger leftist movement by finding more people like AOC and Ilan Omar and Ro Khanna, such people live all around us, but might not ever have thought of getting involved in a social democracy movement. They do not need to be primarying democrats for political office, they could be just working locally to build worker coops. Building more worker cooperatives is the best way to undermine both right wing conservative and centrist neoliberal forces in the long run.
