Have to say you Trotskyites and Stalinists and Leninists are a little too strident. I don't think the Left, the Labour tradition, even the socialist tradition, need to "own" Stalinism and Maoism. Most of that (the atrocities and purges in Soviet Russia and China) was not socialism, and was certainly not democracy. Plenty of avowed Marxists and socialists lost their lives because they outright rejected Stalinism and Maoism. If you do a fair and full analysis, Mao and Stalin where quite right wing and fascist in many aspects, you have to look at what they did through a multidimensional lens not just in terms of broad social policy and broad political economy. The correct (or more accurate) analysis is that what socialism should "own" from the Soviet experiment and the China effort, is mostly good, and most of the bad shit is right wing authoritarian streaks in the leaders in those countries --- which is precisely what the Left should never have to "own". Hell, is there a greater definition of a capitalist "boss" than Stalin or Mao and their successors? I think not. Call them whatever else you like, but they were not democratic socialists nor communists, nor marxists. THe most yo=u cna say is they called themselves, or labelled themselves as such, but it was mostly in name only. I fair modern analogy is that (I'd say 100%) of materially active Jihadists are not Muslim, they are practically anti-Islamist. Islamic Jihad is a spiritual battle, not physical. I think the brutal authoritarian figures in Soviet and Russian and even Cuban "communism" were in many ways anti-communists. You define socail movements by their principles, not by the people who end up being the leaders. The corrupt leaders warp the principles, and wend up betraying the founding principles. So I think there is value in holding to Marx's original principles, modernizing them the way Bhaskar does, and f___king thoroughly dis-owning the right wing leaning atrocities that occurred under the name of communism. Don't be such pussies about it. Disowning shit is 100% legit if it is not your own crap.
