re: Rouhani calling Trump "mentally retarded" (thereabouts). The translator really should've thought it through more carefully how their words would go down with American audiences. Apparently it's a direct translation from a term that isn't offensive in Farsi. Maybe they were so pressed for time that they didn't have time to review it for localized cultural sensitivity--I've got a number of friends who are simultaneous interpreters, and it's *exhausting* work. Still, that really isn't a mistake interpreters at that level should be making, and they're not working with Ahmadinejad who said things he knew were outlandish just to get a reaction.
