Dude you crushed that interview!!! Way to go! I think I could listen again. Reed is a treasure. By any chance did you get to study with him at some point in your education? It's refreshing to hear about what what went down in the 60s to the Left from somebody who, like my father, was actually there. His perspective is refreshing and grounded in our crazy times. Please bring him back more often. I know you recced Class Notes, but is there another book you would rec I read or is a collection like Class Notes the best place to start with reading his work? I feel like his writing will pick up right where I left off in my reading after graduating with a BA is US history back in the day. Thank you!

Great interview can't wait for the slavoj interview

HeyZeus Martinez

Great interview. The correct criticism he makes of self defeating leftists is spot on. Lately leftists communities on social media seem overly hostile to one another. I see myself identifying with all of these leftist factions on the internet and find none better or worst then the other (TMBS and MR well of course you my favorite boo and you know this). Long before I was invested in online political discourse it was humanitarian work, or going to school wanting to become a social worker. Things like that which as I became more knowledgeable would fit as ways of expressing leftism in my own personal life. The right wing/anti-SJW has always claimed the left is filled with people who stick their noses up at others and engage in call out culture. This trope always got under my skin because I really never saw it happening and seemed more a disingenuous projection. It still is coming from them but unfortunately I can’t avoid seeing that kind of behavior taking place with a certain amplification that has been drowning out the overall message of solidarity. It almost feels like the way underground dance music got infiltrated starting 10-15 years ago by people who just figured out they could lose their mind around great looking women and men and the party doesn’t stop but they weren’t drawn to any parts of the culture like the music/DJ, dancing, aesthetic of creating a cohesive space with lighting to furniture to marry all the elements together. All those people were drawn to was the drug aspect which is part of it but if that’s all it is then that person is effectively doing damage to the overall scene. Then it just snowballed into the cats out of the bag and all those high school jock types who often had $ over took the space and a lot of promoters liked finally seeing good profits but the parties became blah because if the majority of the people don’t connect to that culture they don’t treat the party or the ones that are part of those communities with respect. So I might be wrong but a similar thing seems to be going on with the online left. It’s manifests itself in an overly exaggerated almost cartoonish way of checking each other rather than it be like “real recognize real”. That micro aggression can be noted but it’s okay to table something while working for a greater goal. It’s noted so it can be brought up in the future or if it happens habitually. The left needs to focus on what the immediate goals are and how to get there. Right now are losing to the resurgence of fascism throughout the world. I beg the Tulsi people to not be so concerned about if Bernie is going to call out Hillary for being a jerk off to Tulsi. This dude is trying to use the ending years of his life to bring about change for the working class in a material way that helps relieve unnecessary suffering, and also motivate us to think about the power we possess as a group. He knows his importance at this very scary time in our history. I see a beautiful human being that has stuck to his convictions while he watched his colleagues become increasingly corrupted. If we don’t vote Bernie in shame on us. From the discourse I see on the online left I think it’s looking self defeating more and more everyday from the moralists that need to cut down other leftists or these extreme leftists that see Bernie as an authoritarian leader kind of crazy stuff. So Professor Reed’s decision against the whole social media thing for himself was very smart. I can’t imagine the reaction to the infighting that leftist intellectuals who have written books, teach, and have and are involved in the movement for decades would say to the new left devoting energy to issues that should certainly be discussed but must be looked at as secondarily to the overall message of the movement which I believe is being forgotten and being replaced people with privileged woke drama that attracts people who love drama not helping fight for their fellow human in ways that will materially alleviate suffering.

Geeesh, complexifying the issues a little at the beginning, no? Neoliberalism is fairly crisply defined, and it appeals to the PMC more than any other class. But the PMC is much bigger than members of the neoliberal thought collective. I think in 2019 we are seeing just how many PMC folks are showing working class solidarity. Question is will they be enough to out vote Warren style conservative neoliberal-lite progressives?
