Abby Martin is an interesting and courageous journalist. Adolph Reed's characterization of the Panthers was a bit off-putting. Perhaps I wasn't paying attention. Having grown up in the Bay Area and saw first hand the emotional impact they had not on not only the black community but the Puerto Rician, Chicano, Asian American, anti-war activists, and so many others fighting for justice, self-determination and an ending of the war. Despite the cult of personality of some individuals, overall, the Panthers like Fred Hampton's (ahead of his time) contributions can never be understated. The ran a free breakfast program in East Oakland and stood for "armed self-defense." They posed such a threat to the establishment that they were infiltrated, harassed, and assassinated. I wish Reed would have presented a more complex view.

Great opening, but Brooksy, you are sketchy in several ways, almost as bad as Warren. Taxation is one way to limit power of the wealthy, but that is best done justly, with a steep progressive tax code. But what you NEVER want to do is give the rich undue power by conditioning social purpose spending upon their money, and indeed we do not need to. This is the huge benefit to democratic socialism of coming off the gold standard, which created real scarcity and a need for austerity. A fiat currency does not. The Congress, by authorization, can always choose to spend as much money as they like up to zero unemployment and limited inflation, on universal programs, without needed a single dime of money from the rich. We (should) tax the rich ONLY to limit their power, not to pay for anything. If you understand fiat currency operation you will learn that taxes indeed pay for nothing, the idea they do is a false consciousness.

But yes, the needed changes to power dynamics should be obvious to all, and it is classic academic wonkishness which prevents Warren from even beginning to see this. She is (I think) simply blind to the real problems of power imbalance and injustice in current society. But this is all the more reason why you should not be talking about taxes as a "pay for", because that only empowers the deficit hawks, and they are the real enemy, far more dangerous than the wonks like Warren. Although, I have to admit, Warren empowers the deficit hawks. So, yeah, she is bad. But Bernie empowers deficit hawks too, because he is always framing the "pay fors" as coming from taxes (which is complete horse shit). Interview Stephanie Kelton, she will explain why that's all wrong. The only "pay fors" the Congress has are keystrokes in bank accounts. Taxes are only highly indirect "pay fors", that is, taxes "pay for" low inflation, that's all. We do not need taxes to pay for Medicare For All. In fact the opposite, since M4A will be hugely deflationary, implementing M4A will require massive deficit spending or tax cuts on the lowest income families, because there will be thousands of job losses when the health insurance industry collapses. In fact, the BETS way to "pay for" M4A is to use massive deficit spending to implement a Job Gurantee. JG (or a transition job program) and M4A are synergistic, they belong together. Kelton's people (the MMT community) are the ones who originated the modern forms of #JobGuarantee, debt cancellations, and Green New Deal, they had the balls to promote these policies because they know how money systems work. Budgets are moral documents under an MMT lens, they are not financial balancing documents. That no one in the mainstream sees Federal budgets as moral documents is the true financial crime of our times. It's a crime right up there with hate crimes and murder, because austerity economics stemming from fretting about balanced budgets and "pay fors" leads to lower income family debt and death.
