I'm not a fan of comics at all really, and I know joker has been a big deal for like 15 years, but I think that this movie accomplished the amazing feat of elevating the character to basically a Jungian Archetype of the modern era. We went from the cosplay-inspiring alpha bad boy to pathetic loser. I can see where Zizek is coming from by criticizing the "internal struggle" motif to explain the Joker's genesis, but I think the joker's inability, or even lack of curiosity at understanding the source of his own predicament kind of refutes such a reductive causality. In fact, the shattering of canon makes Joker that much more relatable, and this movie leaves enough unsaid to give you something to chew on, something desperately lacking in today's popular art.

Did anyone else get a total Vincent Gallo vibe from Phoenix's performance??
