Dr. Drew Mikhael of Queens University joins us this weekend to discuss unrest in Lebanon. Why a WhatsApp tax was the final straw against austerity for Lebanese citizens. Religion and governance in Lebanon. Isd there room for the left to revitalize itself, particularly outside Hezbollah? The growing recognition of a common class enemy in Lebanon. Tactics of unrest. Iran's role. Lebanon's expatriation problem.

It looks like we are living through the 1848 revolutions just across the whole world this time.

I thought it was fairly powerful when he mentioned that Lebanese mothers want their children to work on building their own country instead of other countries. I'm curious though about what the next step would be assuming all of these protests succeed. They beat the brutal neoliberalism that is ruining their countries, but what then? How do they transition from that neolib system into a more social-democratic or socialist society? (Sorry if that is a stupid question.)

They have to take control of their currency (that means understanding MMT in a nutshell), and form trade unions -- not domestically, but across border trade unions like the European union but not with the ECB/IMF type constraints. Basically, this would allow these countries to equalize their trade relations, without destroying their domestic economies. A bunch of good talks on this were recently given at the conference in Tunis: https://mes-africa.org/
