Meagan Day (@MeaganMDay), staff writer at Jacobin magazine, joins us this weekend to discuss housing.  Bernie’s Green New Deal for Housing.  Eco-fascism and the importance of the working class to the fight against climate change. Meagan’s piece on Ilhan’s more radical housing reform plan, “Ilhan Omar Is the Fighter the Tenants’ Movement Needs." Why even centrists are talking about "movements" now.

Why does Michael not ask any questions about these strange things? Why does public housing need miniature “power generation apparatuses”? Gimmicky green housing experiments have a terrible track record when used in these contexts. People who need a home just need a home, and buildings that fail to reliably serve their purpose are fundamentally not sustainable. Megan gets so much crap on Twitter because she is constantly hedging bets with awkward ‘both sides’ politics. There is nothing to gain from making public housing complicated.

Because its a good idea, the environmental movement needs a positive message along with actuall projects that common people feel involved in outside of activism.

I’ve been waiting for people to say these things for years, great one michael!

I met Meagan at a canvassing day a few years back. She’s a real one... was out there knocking doors with the rest of us schlubs. Proud to have her carrying the flag.

There is surely a lot to gain by making public housing modern and making better use of renewable energy, it is a holistic policy package Bernie is proposing, they are not separate things. Housing has to go with a GND, it is kind of silly not to have the places where people use most energy not integrated into a climate warming mitigation policy. I agree gimmicks are bad ideas, but this is not a gimmick is it?

This needs to be public!

It has been a disaster in New Orleans. They built a bunch of “green” homes for people after the hurricane and they lasted a year or two then had to be rebuilt entirely.
