Joanna Wuest (@joveest), postdoc at Princeton University, joins us this week to discuss her piece "The Sanders Campaign Goes Beyond Intersectionality" in The Nation, and more. The New Left and identity as a framing device. The abandonment of efforts to organize the working class. What is "essentialism" and how does it manifest in different discourses? Science and essentialism. The vindication of Stephen Jay Gould. The proper sequence of the material and the ideological.

Freirean sense.. good guide for sense.

Thank you. IQ is definitely bunk. It's stupid pseudo science.

Pamela Rutherford

Excellent interview. It would be interesting to also speak with biologists to hear their perspective.

Francisco Rodriguez Rascon

Michael Brooks should invite Richard Lewontin, a Marxist biologist who has written on the same topics. Read Biology as ideology, or check out his lectures on youtube.

For a Freirean take on math, check out Bob Moses. People like Michael are "bad at math" for the same reason that Brazilians are "bad at reading".

Matthew Pear

Peter, I think saying that IQ is stupid pseudo science is the right sentiment. I do think that it could be a useful measurement in some ways, but like any technology in the hands of capital, it's oppressive. And it certainly doesn't measure what people think it does.

Wonderful talk. Looking forward to more content on the history of the Left and its increasingly strong bond with individualism. Reminds me of Adam Curtis's doco "The Century of The Self", very much recommend too
