Don't be too sad. One of his campaign managers, Faiz Shakir (guy who used to beg for money) used to campaign for Nancy Pelosi. So Bernie hired people who weren't looking out for him or progressive agenda. We knew it was going to end this way eventually.

Feel a range of emotions about the Bernie news too. Although at this point the biggest one is actually relief. In 2016, Bernie would have walked away with the general election. In 2020, the opposition inside the party and the GOP has had years to hone attacks, Trump is an incumbent, and Trump now also controls many reins of state power. Contra the FDR comparison too, I think FDR was operating from a stronger base to begin with -- both in terms of institutional support and in terms of working class mobilization and organizing. Additionally, FDR took power from a Republican Party that fractured over the response to the Great Depression, with an incumbent who had some commitment to preserving the institutions and processes like elections. We also didn't have the kind of security state and standing army that has arisen since WWII. FDR's case may offer some guidance for the future, but we still have a lot of work to do. I feel like we have done at least some of that in 2015-2020. A lot more work to do.

An additonal addendum -- I hope to God that the Dems find an excuse to run someone other than Biden OR Cuomo. Ideally, someone who will create some space for working people to grow power inside the Democratic Party. The party has to stop cannibalizing its base.
