Can you recommend any books or articles offering a nuanced POV of Communist and Socialist regimes; the USSR and Cuba especially but also Mao's China. I want to understand what works/worked about these governments to apply to creating a lasting Socialism here in the present. Cheers!

michael parenti is the best for this. he is a marxist and his biggest focus is countering anti-communist propaganda and defending socialist leaders (e.g. the sandanistas) but he will still make nuanced, contextualized critiques of socialist states.

Could you recommend a good book about apartheid? I'm looking for a deep dive into how the system functioned and how it was dismantled (preferably not a biography). Thanks

Can you fire Matt Lech so he can stream more?

How can we start to build a stronger left where media, politicians, activists, etc. are strategizing together and at least having a central message? The progressive caucus should actually be voting together even if they have disagreements on the details of legislation. Where’s the actual opposition to Pelosi? A few no votes here and there from 10 different progressives? Can left media have these politicians on? I know that’s hard but maybe we petition them to do x amount of interviews a month with independent outlets? We’ll obviously vote for them and donate to their campaigns because they’re the best we’ve got, but we need another way to hold them accountable and get their message out to more voters.

In response to the statement that in the post Bernie era, our focus has to move hard toward labor if we want to start winning: tell me what you guys think but here's my take -- while I wholeheartedly agree that this should be at the center of our legislative agenda and at the heart of our movement, if the conversation is about strategy and winning, then I'm afraid if the crux of our effort is not FINDING A WAY TO APPEAL TO OLDER VOTERS , we are engaging in little more than mental masturbation. We have to win in order to assume and assert power. If we are losing 85 to 15 or worse among the most reliable voters in the party, there is no way we can do that. So, if we are going to maintain a strong pro labor agenda, AND we are going to appeal to older voters, then it comes down to messaging. If the right wing can get working class constituents to vehemently oppose trust fund babies having to pay tax on their 10 million dollar inheritence, we can convince any demographic to find our agenda appealing if we do it correctly.

I got one more... from a UK viewer... what is Jesse Lee Peterson? We don’t have any of them at present. Closest I can think is Katie Hopkins (?)

Thinking about getting into Alexander Cockburn as a writer. What's a good book to start with? Thanks.

For future consideration, I'd like you guys to engage with Black Marxism by Cedric Robinson. Also, for interesting info in China-Black America history see The East Is Black: Cold War China in the Black Radical Imagination by Robeson Taj Frazier.
