If you enjoy Thomas Frank's, The People, No, you might be interested to learn that there is a new international Populist Movement underway. As you know, the core of the Populists Movement was the understanding that there was not enough money in the economy for workers, farmers and small businesses to survive - hence the Free Silver platform which ostensibly would provide more money than a scarce gold-based system.

What you may not know is that the precursor to the Populists was the Greenback Movement which promoted money, not based on metal, but issued by the government. Government issued Greenbacks, which allowed Lincoln to fund the Civil War, represent the only time the US government actually created money. Before then and ever since the quashing of the issuance of Greenbacks by the banking corporations, all money in our economy is created by commercial banks when they loan.

The revived populist movement, Just Money Reform in the US, takes up the mantel of these early movements to restore the power to create the people's money back to the people. www.monetaryalliance.org
