The various titles and franchises that fandoms revolve around are what makes anime convention culture. AnimeCon Harem is set in an alternate universe where the brand-names fans may know have all been replaced with bland-names. Anime fans should be able to tell what is really being referred to, while non-fans should still be able to enjoy the story without having to bone up on anime trivia. Also avoids reader bias, and pesky things like copyright.

If you feel an important piece of fan culture should be represented in the story, offer up a bland name to represent it! In current order of appearance:

Monster Battlers (Pokemon) Flamituff, Pandape, Turtusk, Terrander, Fierhog, Oaknaut, Solar Bear, Capture traps (Pokeballs), Embrin

Fantasy Wars (Final Fantasy) Lance, Leonus, Sophia (Cardinal uniforms from the games, Ordinal uniforms in the movie version)

I knew some of the more general ones, but not even half of your list. Thank you for this.

FortySixtyFour

I've been trying to make them unobtrusive as possible, so it isn't like there's a ton of supporting references. I was just going to need a list eventually just so I could keep them all consistent as possible, haha.

FortySixtyFour

When I think of characters who stand out specifically in cosplay culture, L from Death Note became infamous for being a lazy/no-effort cosplay, and D.Va bodysuits are becoming meme THOT-wear.

jmundt33a

So what's the name of the cosplay that inspires Fletcher's handle? Something like Chaste Divinity for Ah My Goddess, but there are a bunch of different animes that monkey around with Valkyrie names. Thanks very much for this glossary. I'm familiar with some of the material and aware of more of it, but there are series that I haven't investigated yet.

FortySixtyFour

That's a tough one for me to decide because I haven't read the source material for it yet! Or should I watch the anime instead?

Lukeshadowrider

Oh and it would probs be Ranger, Mage, and Tank if the classes are mentioned

Miragian

Here I was thinking "Grail" was a reference to "Fate" by name anyway.

JustAChair

I had a hunch about the skullmasks. I was pretty surprised to see Ratman referenced as I've always though it wasn't that well known.

FortySixtyFour

I didn't make that connection at the time, but it seems really obvious now. My girlfriend's real into the Fate series, all I'd ever seen is Fate stay night and it seemed meh.

FortySixtyFour

Love the Jackies! It's also a thinly-veiled way for me to describe my particular cosplay experiences, as for my first five years or so hitting cons I was known for being that random Stormtrooper at an anime convention. Having a costume that can render you anonymous is a whole different experience, haha.

JustAChair

I've always like the idea of the full body cosplays. I've just been wary to give it a shot. It seems quite difficult.

Miragian

I watched the first one, it got a bit weird at the end. Haven't tried much in the way of any of the later ones.

jmundt33a

The interconnectivity in those is weird. One's a prequel series. One's an "alternate universe series" with the same character names as "Stay Night" but they make slightly different choices and the focus shifts. And there was a lot of bellyaching about Fate Stay Night at the time, but after the other series have showed up, some of its most strident critics have said--maybe it wasn't bad.

jmundt33a

Anime. Definitely the anime.

Miragian

Well in theory the whole they keep being called out to fight periodically would lend itself to easy sequels but it seems they took the weird path on that front. They being the spirits of whatever the heck name they have I can't remember it.

FortySixtyFour

Wait a minute. No, Future Fate won't work because people will associate it immediately with the Fate franchise (way moreso than "Grail" which we were discussing elsewhere in this comments section.)

Lukeshadowrider

Future Osud. Patu is destiny but in Czech
