Content

As someone perpetually on the edge of poverty, I naturally want to give readers great incentive to support me. At the same time, it still seems a little despicable to hide content behind a paywall from readers who love the story but simply can't afford to send money.

So far, my Patreon page has basically acted as a tip jar, as everything on it's been pretty much public to read and free for all. As much as having exclusive content seems like the very best incentive to offer... it also means that the story as posted to so many other sites is simply then an incomplete version. If those readers only ever see the bare-bones version, are they going to be impressed enough to gamble at becoming a patron and seeing the rest?

Having the atrociously expensive Waifu-tier seems fair, because while during any visit to an anime convention you'll meet a lot of extremely weird and interesting characters—I can't accommodate every single reader who wants to be put in the story without turning it into a complete mess.

tldr; I've been struggling with this issue for a long time, torn between greed and guilt, and any patron input would be greatly appreciated. You're the ones paying my bills right now, you honestly deserve more of a say on this than I do.

Don't be ashamed of posting the bonus content for paid patrons only...many suthors post matetials for paid patrons only, and then the public can access them days or weeks later (e.g. when the next chapter is posted, the previous one becomes free). This early access is their wsy of saying Thank You for Supporting Me. Likewise with tiers...more patreonage = more access, whether that means earlier access or exclusive content.

I think that the lure of patron only bonuses will get some more fans to contribute actual money.

Definitely one of the first two - I wouldn't be a patron if you hadn't lured me to your Patreon page with the promise of more stories. Preferably the first one. You're living off your Patreon income, and almost everyone can afford a dollar a month for extra rewards. Don't ever be ashamed of needing to eat, and don't ever think that your stories aren't worth paying for.

I agree with the early access and the ability to give input. I dont think you should think of us patrons as customers you have to cater to. We are sponsors who believe in what you are doing and wish to give our support. I dont think you'll get more patrons by tempting them with more content than you would if you just gave a bigger and more complete story. I could be wrong though.

Just remember that psychologically if humans are given something they become entitled. Paying for something actually enhances the experience.

It's the beauty of the bonus. You say incomplete, I say like watching Avengers without seeing the previous movies. The main story doesn't need to be complete as long as it's whole, and if they want the complete story they can show up and shill out for the rest of the content.

If you're not one already, you'd make a great salesperson.

Ideally, I would suggest you do as some other web serial authors do and put the extra stories available to everyone, but only if a certain milestone is reached. However, your stories are too niched for that to work. In this situation, your best bet is to put them behind a paywall, until for now.

Try that model for half an year and see how it goes for you and then adapt accordingly.

Think of this in terms of publishing. If you were to publish either of these stories in novel form, people would have to pay for it right? Then if you were to publish a collection of bonus material people would pay for that too. Or a special collectors edition that contained the bonus content with the original novel, which would usually run for more money. Let the story that we enjoy stand on it's own and it will draw readers to patreon, just like we did.

People to pay should be first to read, but after a period of your choosing, the story regular and bonus chapters should be available in its entirety for everyone everywhere. You have to have a way to let people be able to find and read your story. But a few choice bonus chapters here and there if you want exclusivity can’t hurt. I can elaborate better in a conversation.

HardhatDoozer

I agree more or less. Post the main story everywhere. Post the bonus content “eventually” like maybe after several months or for many authors just weeks is enough.
