In what would normally be a project-ending disaster, our lead artist Zaphryon quit without warning—necessitating the replacement of all of the main character art.

Six different artists did test work for us throughout the second dev year, and in the end our extremely reliable crowd artist YeMcBear was chosen. From that point onward she worked on both the main cast designs as well crowds, so that all characters styles would match up to one another best.

Ugh. Chloe and Mary deserve tremendous comeuppances, but the bad karma they track in their wake seems to get smeared on bystanders instead. The mustard was a good start. Hopefully, more to come.

I can't speak for Chloe, as she won't be appearing in this chapter, but I feel that Mary sees the world in strict terms of social hierarchy rather than a more ordinary morality. A sort of "might makes right" mentality, where "might" is status and wealth. This has a lot to do with how she was raised. Her older brother Mark rejected this line of thought to instead become a cynical bastard who chases his own obessions and thumbs his nose at social paradigms altogether. Mary obviously disdains her brother (the feeling is very mutual), but what will happen when she really realizes that AnimeCon itself has its own distinct pecking order? I wanted to explore that by Mary meeting Sarah and her friends, (particularly Qin Wanwan, also Chinese), but I don't know if I'll have time to explore it as a subplot without stealing time away from the already large cast of other characters.
