Effective January 1st of 2023, I'll be redoing all of the tiers here, removing most of them, raising some prices, and changing up our Discord server. This isn't something I do lightly, and I haven't messed with them much since January 1st of 2019, when I changed this Patreon page from a tip jar to a $1 paywall for my writing content.

I don't value my own writing very highly. Whenever one of my author peers tries to argue with me about my pledge tiers being comically low, I justify it by saying my writing speed is a lot slower than most other writers. While true, I haven't achieved the best balance with keeping myself out of depression and poverty stress because of all my bad decisions in relation to how I monetize my work.

1) Removing vanity tiers completely.

The Guest and Waifu tiers were about submitting characters to appear in the sidestories, but I spend so little time working on the sidestories and struggle so much with incorporating changes that patrons ask for that it's simply not worth what people have been paying. I will continue and complete the sidestories in play, regardless of whether or not those tiers still exist.

The $10 tier was for thanking readers by name at the end of posted public chapters, but when I implemented that way back then I thought it would be five or six names. The list of names grew out of control, I don't think anyone found it as meaningful to be one word in a giant paragraph block of names, and I had a lot of problems tracking which of those patrons wanted me to not use their account name or real name or wanted to not be mentioned. Patrons come and go a lot month to month, and it turned into a mess.

2) VIP tier will not change.

$5 is fair to follow the game project as it progresses, and I have no qualms with the VIP patrons also having access to all of the writing.

3) $1 Fan and $2 Attendee tier will both be removed.

Everyone will receive another warning notice before 2023. The $1 is too low and not particularly feasible with the flat transaction fee cost that gets appended anyways. I honestly grew to hate the $2 tier that gave access to draft work in Google Docs, because I don't write or organize the sections in progress in a way that's meant for reading.

 4) New tiers for advance writing content.

Likely will be $3, but I'm still arguing with some friends about it. RE: Trailer Trash advance chapters will become available, while before they were simply a random bonus whenever I had sections okayish enough to put up before posting the public chapter. I wasn't keen on monetizing RE: Trailer Trash at all, as it was my fun hobby side project, but going forward I will begin to give Trash and AnimeCon (or actually AnimeCon's sequel Renfaire) equal attention. Ready or not I'm going to post the AnimeCon conclusion public before 2023, so Renfaire will be starting off with more of a clean slate when it comes to all the chapters I tend to hoard.

5) Discord Server.

As for our discord community, starting 2023 all pledgers will automatically be invited (pulled into the discord against their will by the Patreon bot). Up until now I've only had that pledge incentive for the tiers above $1, which make up roughly half of my patrons.

Our discord has played fast and loose with moderation as there's rarely been any issues that require addressing intervention; in 2023 we'll be introducing written rules and actual moderation. Right now only Irony and I have powers there, but I'm also going to extend invitation to Montugar and Rose. I trust them with my life, and they're active. If one or both of them decline, I'll just pick all the meanest patrons I can find and stick them into a gu jar until only the most aggressive and cunning ones emerge. I'm pretty sure that's how selecting mods works.

6) Please comment here with your thoughts or concerns.

The feedback I'd like from everyone is what you think is fair pricing when you weigh my writing quality against its poor rate of completion, and perhaps even more importantly—should RE:TT and AH be segregated from each other tier-wise. While I've enjoyed a lot of overlap and cross-pollination between readers, the simple fact is that a lot of Trash readers have zero interest in AnimeCon and do not want to receive those email updates, and likewise a lot of AnimeCon readers feel that way about Trash.

Dashinhi

I'm sorry, I'm just giggling at your characterization of your output as a poor rate of completion. You are much better than another author I follow, who has taken to regularly posting empty placeholder chapters. I think you're worth at least $3 a month.

Steven "Bull" Ratkovich

Sounds good and won't effect me :) And I'm here for both RE:TT and ACH. For a split, are you talking two different discords or something? Not sure how that'd work.

FortySixtyFour

Isn't it? Most of my RR peers post up completed chapters twice a week as a bare minimum.

Jam

The new changes make sense and I agree with the increase in cost for the lower tiers.

FortySixtyFour

I think it'd have to be separate tier rewards. My concern is that some readers do NOT want updates for both series in their emails.

Flying Goat

Sounds good to me - I've read other authors complain about overhead of $1 tiers. I'm in the $2, but have been thinking about increasing it because of that overhead, and wanting to offer a bit more support for my favorite series (Being a bit unsure of the slower release than the other series I follow is why I didn't start with more than that, but the chapters are quite chonky, and I remain happy with the rate of release, after 2-3 months of subscribing). On splitting tiers: I have no interest in AnimeCon myself, so I disabled those emails (tried it, not my cup o' tea, prefer fewer emails I'm not interested in). Separate tiers makes sense to me. One option, if you don't want to charge more for both (if you do want a more expensive tier for both, that's totally reasonable too, of course) is to just make 3 $3 tiers - one for each series, and one for both. I believe people can switch between equivalently-priced Patreon tiers for free, I think? Not positive of that - know I've switched from a $5 tier+$5 extra dollars to a $10 tier without being charged again, at least. Free switching might allow people to get both for the price of just one, if you charge more for getting both, though. I haven't experimented with tier switching, so may be completely wrong about how it works - it may be something authors can configure.

Timtom

So I don't read your trailer trash series. Are you going to make a payment option for just ACH chapters? I've paid for months where you don't write ACH chapters. If you had an option to just pay per chapter of ACH maybe I would pay more but as it is ill probably have to cancel at the end of the year.

Cashmere Woods

I joined for ACH and stayed away from RE:TT. The email updates and discord convinced me to read it, and now I am hooked! #TeamTabby

Bryan Larsen

This (and a friend's band) are the only patreons that I've stayed subscribed to for longer than a year. The $1 price tag is definitely part of the reason why. Anything $5 and up I've just subscribed for long enough to read the content and then unsubscribe. A good book is worth about $20 IMO. IOW, at the pace of Re:TT, $1/month is about right for me. At $3/month I'd expecting 2 books per year or so. Which maybe you're doing, but I don't read AnimeCon. $3 is between $1 and $5, so I'm not sure whether I'll upgrade and drop. The money is just a tip -- I read Re:TT on Royal Road; I prefer the finished edited chapters to the partial chapters available here. So the only thing I'll lose is the satisfaction of contributing to something I enjoy. But don't let me talk you out of dropping the $1 tier. You deserve to be well paid for Re:TT, and even though you might lose my $1, I'm fairly confident you'll make more overall. [edited] P.S. I would totally go for a $20/year option, if that helps with fees.

AngryTurnip

I found AC on literotica and it was awesome. I subscribed so I could get more of that. Honestly I was a bit disappointed in how slow that's been added to. However once I had read every scrap of AC I could get my hands on, I tried RE:TT and it's amazing, maybe even better than AC. So if you need me to pony up a little more scratch? Absolutely (particularly if you keep anything close to this pace).

Aesoir

Your chapter scaling is off. Most RR chapters are SIGNIFICANTLY smaller, in fact most authors actually break up their chapters in parts as they post. 2.5-4K is usually a comfortably long web chapter length. Your chapter lengths are 4-8x that, so you’re effectively posting 4-8 chapters a month. Well worth $3-5 a month.

ZeroCross

You should absolutely monetize RE:TT. I think the 3$ is fair. You should consider raising the game tier to 7$. Between inflation and raising the lowest tier to 3$, it'd make more sense that way. You should have tiers highest than this, even if it's just polls or whatever.

JackStiles

Sadly im only here for ACH and while I see a lot of releases of TT, much less on ACH. I kept the sub going for years because it was so cheap, i do wish you luck for those who enjoy TT or both. I think it is a good call. Even if I won't continue it.

Ope 'scuse me

Completely agree! I also want to reply to FortySixtyFour that the vast majority of those updates on RR are really just pointless posts. I find myself enjoying a story when I can binge through 40 some chapters, only to realize that when I catch up to the authors posting schedule that each of those individual posts amount to nothing happening. I much prefer when authors take time to put out a real chapter with good story content.

Greg King

I thought that I would be raised from $5 to $10. I would have paid it. Due to my age, I don't have any interest in ACH. But TT has me spellbound and I will also happily purchase the next volume when it's released. I think that you are quite a talented writer and have enjoyed every permutation of the chapters you create. Even the ones where Taitha's inside a game.

Cliff

I have no problem paying more. And I'd prefer to be separated from RE (not my kind of story), but it's no big deal that I get notifications for it.

Sparifankerl

I joined for your writing and that hasn't changed since. I'd say that AnimeCon reeled me in but these days I actually consider Re:TT to be the better story as it is consistently a story about growing up in difficult circumstances whereas AnimeCon oscillates between being a fun romp story and mental health issues. Either story type is fine for me and the writing quality is good but they don't mesh together terribly well, in my opinion. The AnimeCon sidestories aren't exactly helping either and at one point I decided to just ignore them. In comparison, Re:TT is something that you could actually publish as high quality YA without needing a lot of editing. To be honest, I'm not really interested in the game, especially not in early stages of it. I might buy it once it's finished but that depends on the mood of the day when that day comes. I won't be joining that Patreon tier. (Most early access games on Steam are a bit disappointing so I've pretty much given up on that and wait for the game to be released properly these days. The only exception are Winterlook games because I've really enjoyed S.H.E.L.T.E.R.)

Cliff

I have no problem paying more. And I'd prefer to be separated from RE (not my kind of story), but it's no big deal that I get notifications for it.

Sparifankerl

To be clear: I will appreciate a reading tier with access to all your writing. You may not be the fastest writer but you are writing quality stuff.

Granraude

I have no issues paying more. I like both ACH and RE:TT.

posiedon11

While I only pay $1, it’s only because I’m being cheap. Im willing to spend more

Kirby

1) I always thought your entry-level tiers were way too cheap. 3$ as a monthly minimum should do fine. 2) I came because of ACH, but I stayed for RE:TT. So I think you should not separate them Patron-wise, as you are also dividing your time between them. 3) Email has the huge advantage of being easily filterable. I use that a lot and I think being able to do that should be a prerequisite to being allowed to use the internet in the first place. (Kidding, of course, but still.) 4) Yes, your output is slow, but don't all readers say that to all authors? Way more importantly, your quality is always great. 5) What I personally am not at all interested in is the game stuff. That could be something for tiers of $7-15 and upwards.

Donald McLean

I love TT but bounced hard off of AH repeatedly, so I would rather not be paying for content I have no interest in. On the other hand, if TT is getting equal time, that’s enough for me and splitting isn’t that big a deal.

WhiteRabbit

I would prefer you made enough money to reduce your stress. I have seen authors (believe it was Rachel Aaron) talk about how their productivity went up when they made enough to live decently. Personally I am not interested in TT at all, came here just for Animecon, so I would prefer you spend time on that, but it seems like that's pretty split in your readers.

Chriton

I can understand adjusting the tiers to cater to the different groups surrounding your works. I don't agree with getting rid of the vanity tiers completely. I'm in the $10 month tier, and it's not to get my name mentioned somewhere or anything like that. It's not about me. I'm in that tier because it's worth that and more, and I'd stay there regardless of your release schedule. I'm in that tier because it's what I can afford and it's easily justified. If I could donate more per month I would. I don't think I'm the only one either.

Alison Stoneklifft

I am here for RE: trash only. Am at 1 dollar because it's there but would bump up to 2-3 bucks. Not 5.

Aesoir

Opinion: Divide ACH and TT. Keep each respective content tier at or under $5.00 USD. $3.00 is perfectly fine for now, but I would seriously consider getting 2 TT chapters ahead (12-20 equivalent RR chapters), and maybe bump it up to $4.50-5.

Thomas Corbin

I'd go up to $5. $3 certainly. You've been doing a lot of TT lately, so it's been great.

FortySixtyFour

$3 for just RE:TT, $3 for just AnimeCon, and $5 for RE:TT + AnimeCon + Game progress? Does that sound fair?

Nick

I joined this Patreon to see the RE:TT content - the ACH content is essentially a side-story to me. Not bothered by it, but it's not what I'm here for. At the same time, avoiding segregation might be helpful to readers, so that they understand that you have two projects and you switch between them. Right now, if you segregated them, an ACH reader would have seen no updates in the past 30 days, and might not understand that you've been working on something else in that time. Will join the new tiers regardless of whether they're segregated, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. :)

Kevin Matheny

I'm at $5 and happy to get just writing. Game stuff is interesting but not critical. Your writing is worth $5 a month for me, and you being out of poverty is important. I think you should keep higher tiers to give people the opportunity to give you money.

Kevin Matheny

One thing to consider is having tiers that provide faster access, like Shirtaloon does. So the $5 tier gets writing one week after the $10 tier.

Matt

I’m cool with $5 and just here for trailer trash

qxvw198

I would be fine with splitting the main stories into separate tiers or whatever. I can't do trailer trash and would be fine with it disappearing from my radar. I do want to continue with ACH and the followup.

CuyahogaKingKong

I don't read TT but IMHO it's better to have them together. If you want to gate it I'd do it as "X chapters ahead"

qxvw198

I think you are still undervalued. I'm fine with $5 for just AnimeCon alone and maybe $8 for game progress too. You could have a different $5 for Re:TT alone and $10 for everything.

MrPrime

IMO, you are a terrific writer and your new plan is more than fair.

MrSkyentist

Joined off ACH and read through all of TT afterward. Not genres I have ever enjoyed reading in the past so when you say "I don't value my own writing very highly", that's dumb. I dislike patreon as a company and made one specifically to help support and enjoy you're content, so I've now done three things I wouldn't have ever considered before based solely off your writing. If the minimum for both stories goes to $5 that's a deal in my mind compared to most other authors.

Ed Burke

I found re:tt on SOL then after reading what was posted jumped into ach. I joined here before Sol grabbed stuff chapters not published and posted them. I just listened to the re:tt audio book I would love to up my tier but money is tight right now. But I know I can swing $3. So once there is that option that is what I am going to do

Jeanie6754

Started with AnimeCon but gradually fell in love with Re:TT. So I am enjoying having more of that content right now. The Discord thing is annoying given my history but whatever. I'll linger for a bit. But with all the other stuff as far as what you are charging for the content I leave that up to you because that's ultimately your decision to make. And I will provide as much as I am able to. Great work and keep it up. I am excited for your future as a published author.

Rob Gerrand

Somehow you need to ignore the critic in your head. You are a very good writer, and I am completely perplexed why you don't have an agent or a mainstream publisher. Your work is so engrossing. Also, why do you not use your name? Is that perhaps an issue with publishers?

Orion1024

Love that TT is getting more love, it's my favourite by far. Thanks for your work !

Stultus

Honestly? While you do take ages to write, I don't really mind it due to the quality of your writing. I don't think I can exaggerate how much I love your writing. I think it is honestly incredible the way you write; how you create such believable characters. Something I struggle with myself when writing is making characters and scenarios that are interesting and unique. I often fail, due to what I think is a lack of experience; I'm not even 25 yet. I haven't lived long enough, or experienced enough in my life to be able to create something new from my life and experiences. It's like trying to create new combinations of number sequences when you only have three numbers. If you have 10 different numbers you can create a multitude of possible combinations. anyway I would probably go as high as 10$ just for access to advanced chapters, but I'm also a greedy pirate. However, I VIGOROUSLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO VALUE YOUR WORK MORE. :)

IceMaverick

Compared to other web authors I read and/or follow, you *do* take longer between your posts and get things out slower than others. However, you also put out posts that are 2, 3, even 4 times as long as many of the other authors I follow, who tend to break their stuff up into much smaller segments so that they can get frequent updates out the door. I don't think there's any reason not to value your work more than you do. I've admittedly not read either story in quite a hot minute. According to my Patreon emails from you (which I only open yours when I read the part to actually keep track of what I've read) the last time I read the chapters were 8-Part 2 for Re:TT and 12-Part 11 for ACH, and I kept putting off reading them because I wanted them to build up for a while so I had a lot to read, and then I just kinda got lost in life a bit so I never went back to it. Despite not reading anything since like... June 2021, I've been happy to keep chucking the $1 because... it's a dollar. I'm happy to chuck up to $5 a month on something every month, even if I'm only occasionally dipping in to check out the content, as long as I can be sure that content is there for me when I do decide to pop in. So yeah, go ahead, pump those numbers up. Make a lot of subscribers happy by having 2 lower tiers that access each story and 1 bigger tier that unlocks both of them (which is where I'll be). On a personal level, anything that's a double-digit subscription usually gets used for exactly 1 month where I binge EVERYTHING available in that month, and then immediately cancelled for the rest of the calendar year. Anything between $5-9 I'm happy to let it ride and only gets cut if I'm not using it at least once a month or if my budget suddenly gets tight. Anything $5 and under can just stay enabled as long as the content doesn't stop from the producer's end, no matter how slow it drips. I know a lot of other people have much different tolerances for how much value they need to feel like they make from subscriptions, but that's just where my own level is at.

Ceranai

I think these price points are quite good references. It varies a lot and ive cut back a lot the last few months but i have similar reactions to each price.

qxvw198

I would really like a new tier that has everything related to ACH but no Re:TT. The basic premise of Re:TT, going back and reliving your teenage years, is upsetting to me due to stuff from my teenage years. So, I would like to see everything about ACH but not have sad memories pop up every time I see a Re:TT post.

JackStiles

Here Here, would like an ACH only tier.

Marius

I did not honestly know how the Patreon cut worked. I've been throwing 1-2$ at 15-20 different creators each month, not realizing that less than I expected reach their destination. I've googled, and a different patreon said that 3$ gave the best bang for the buck for low-tier donations. If so, that's sounds like a good place to place the lowest tier.

Marius

Curious; I am the exact opposite. I read ACH a while, but didn't enjoy the porn part enough to continue. On the other hand, Re:TT hits all the feels, and I want more!

JackStiles

While the pornographic parts of ACH are okay, the general concept especially with all the new info we got out of the last few chapters make it interesting to me. Always more on the scifi fantasy side. I just wish we'd see the same updates TT gets. It was disheartening after sevral months to check back to only find 1 chapter. Then to be charged more for what seems to be the main part I don't read is disappointing.

Mazoyer

Hello Forty. I haven’t been able to talk to you in ages. Sorry. Irl life can be tough but you definitely know that better than I do. I have been really sad reading your post. I support your position 100%. I do not care how slow you write. And I don’t mind sending a few more bucks to keep the advantage I have now, especially if it helps you out of poverty and the difficult situation you are in. Your stories are really good and I think you have a real talent. So keep going and don’t mind the critics. I wish all the best and won’t let you down. Regards, buddy !

BaakoHeng

Hiya! Been silent reader, and on/off $1 patron for a while lol Im fine with the price hike, Im actually suprised u didnt do it faster, with thr ecnomony around the world rly bad like this.

Pete5K

Regarding the publisher issue: As a non-involved party, I'd suggest reaching out Royal Guard Publishing for Anime Harem Con. They publish a lot of harem stuffs and from what I've seen, they offer good terms for indie authors. I don't have any sort of vested interest in them other than seeing both good authors and them succeed since I'm a fan of their founder. --Forgot to mention, you can find their contact info on Facebook.

Mundane

Super late to the party but I just wanted to give you my public support for the changes and tell you that your writing is absolutely more than worth it! <3

Javidom

So, i don't keep up to date with your Stories. I love trailer trash but it can be difficult to read between chapters. I think 5$ for all/certain amount of advamced chapters should be a good price. If Not all, then 10$ for another Set and 20 for names, Docs, etc
