Greetings Patrons!

This week we're presenting our February Eldritch Experiment: the Wraith Blade Sorcerer subclass! You can download the attached PDF at the end of this post.

The Wraith Blade Sorcerer has been possessed by the spirit of a warrior, imbuing them with otherworldly magic and martial abilities. The spirit fuses itself to the inherently magical soul of the sorcerer, allowing their undead influence and martial prowess to flow into the magic inhabiting the sorcerer, giving them natural talents with a blade, and the ability to channel spectral energy into their weapons.

The Wraith Blade Sorcerer is our attempt to create a melee-focused sorcerer in a similar fashion to concepts like the Bladesinger Wizard, or the Valour Bard. When we first pondered this concept for sorcerers, we knew we wanted to have them play using Meta-magic along with their melee attacks. We also wanted to drive home the themes of an undead spirit bound to the soul of the sorcerer.

I guess we give feedback here? 🤔 If no, please let me know. I understand that you don't want to give the class the option to melee attack with charisma, because you don't want to make it to powerful. But I need to admit that in comparison to a warlock that focuses on the blade incantations it feels like this subclass is missing something or falling behind, at least in my initial feeling. Maybe I'm to generous when it comes to the power of my players or I'm underestimating what the meta-blade feature can do, but I would consider homebrowing that feature in just so that my player can focus on charisma if they want to 🤔

Thanks for the feedback! Feel free to share here on on Discord

We're concerned giving the subclass CHA-based attacks will push it over the line power-wise, and so we do want to encourage players to take a DEX / CHA approach.

This really reminds me of the Ghostwalker book from the Forgotten Realms novels. Love the theme. Edit: After reading, I think you should keep Meta Blade, but I agree that it feels like a 6th level feature. I also think it needs the ability to attack with charisma. It doesn't give extra armor proficiencies, so you're locked into a Dex build for your weapons. Giving all martial weapon proficiencies feels a bit wasted when you can't use any strength based weapons without devastating your build. It feels like you're pigeonholed into multiclassing into Warlock or Fighter to compensate. I want to take this subclass all the way, but it feels like I'm mechanically blocked from doing so. I think giving it the ability to attack with Cha would help compensate a lot for those things. It's pretty freely available for Warlock in both 2014 & 2024 editions, so it doesn't feel like it's less powerful to me. Light and medium armor proficiencies would be nice too, or maybe Unarmored AC. You could make it part of Warrior Spirit or it's own thing. It'd help add to level 3 so Meta Blade could be moved to 6th level without leaving a gap in level 3.

I have been wishing for a sorcerer gish forever and this fulfills that niche perfectly. I do like the meta blade feature. It seems a bit much at first, but I believe the value isn't crazy. Some even seem a bit underpowered. I do agree with the sentiment that they should get CHA based attacks, especially with the revised blade singer from UA having it and the decreased weapon proficiency. I believe that Ghost Form is a bit under tuned for a 14th level feature, but that's not a big issue. Ghostly Possession also seems weird. For an 18th level feature all I get are possibly better STR Con and Dex scores for an hour. On top of that its limited to only humanoids. Features like this are hard to translate well into D&D without some exploits if the feature gives a lot of leeway, but by the time 18th level rolls around, I wouldn't mind the ability to cause some shenanigans.

After seeing that it doesn’t actually have to be a blade, this made me imagine someone who went tomb raiding and found a pharaoh’s crook and flail (I know it’s a different flail but still) and got possessed by the pharaoh after touching the flail

I feel like instead of encouraging DEX builds, this encourages Sorlock even more. I was working on a Gish Sorcerer subclass, my take on meta magic was to make a separate set of meta blade abilities at 3rd level, you have access to all 3. It doesn’t have to be linked to the meta magic options. Another possible way around it is having the meta magic options give a freebie that becomes your Extra Attack (for example, 1 Sorcery Point for an Extra Attack or 4 if you want 2 extra attacks) then Innate Sorcery in the later level can supply free extra attacks without sorcery points. I think there are a few ways of going about this but I also understand the struggle of finding the one you’re comfortable with that’s also balanced.

I really do like this subclass a lot, but I will say something that I might be in the minority for: I think this subclass is by far the weakest of the gishes in DnD. The meta blade feature I feel is a little undertuned, and I think this subclass should either: 1. Be able to use Cha for attacks, 2. Have some kind of armor and/or shield proficiency (even if it is just light armor), or 3. Have a bladesong-like ability to wear they can up their AC even a little. Even a combination of multiple of these ideas would do too, as this class is one where there’s no incentive to go full 20 levels of sorc and instead always multiclass with warlock, fighter, paladin, and/or rogue. I do love the theme of this subclass a lot though, and something I would rave to try at my table!

If wanting to push players towards a more dex/cha build, maybe add a feature called Flowing Wraith at 3rd level if the Meta Blade gets pushed to a 6th level feature, Flowing Wraith would allow the Wraith Blade Sorcerer to apply their Dex modifier to the damage of any weapon they wield without being a Finnese weapon, maybe add to that where if the weapon does have the Finnese property, they can make a bonus action attack with that weapon
