Ethan let out an embarrassed laugh. “I thought… maybe hire a professional spy.”
Claire blinked. “A spy? This isn’t Hollywood, Ethan.”
Ethan tried to smile, but the hopelessness seeped through. “I know… but an outsider won’t understand the lab protocols. They’d get caught in minutes. Whoever investigates has to understand the systems. Understand Dad’s work. And they have to be someone the staff won’t question.”
He swallowed. The only person who fits that description… is me,” he realized, heat rising in his chest. His young blood sharpened the thought, turning it into a vow. Just a few days… maybe weeks. I’ll find the mole. And yeah, after that, we can rebuild the financial model and restart the profitable divisions.
He said it quietly, but the words shifted the air.
Claire opened her mouth to respond, but Sam dramatically dropped his phone into his lap.
“Oh honey,” Sam chimed, “you walking in there as yourself is like a neon sign that says: ‘Warning! Potential heir approaching! Hide all crimes immediately!’” He snapped his fingers for emphasis.
Ethan shot him a look. “Sam, not now.”
