Tanya didn’t wait for his permission. With professional speed, she found the pins. Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, humiliation burning his cheeks.

“Oh! Okay!” Tanya said, her voice jumping an octave as she stared at Ethan’s short hair.

“We’re working with a blank slate!” Sam corrected cheerfully. “Bleach it. All of it. I want the roots to scream ‘Scandinavian Ice Princess.’”

Ethan stared at his reflection as Tanya began mixing a pungent white paste in a bowl. “Sam,” he whispered, watching Tanya approach with the brush. “If you bleach my actual hair, I can’t take it off. A wig is one thing. This is… this is my actual body.”

“That’s the point, genius,” Sam whispered back, leaning into Ethan’s ear, his breath smelling of mints. “If you have to adjust a wig every five minutes at the lab, you’ll be caught before lunch. If it grows out of your head, nobody questions it. Now, sit still and be a good girl.”

Tanya slapped the cold, chemical-laden brush against Ethan’s temple. He flinched.

“It might tingle a little, hun,” Tanya said, working efficiently.

Tingle? It burned. It felt like ants were dancing on his scalp. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the conversation happening above his head.

“So, doesn’t she have a boyfriend?” Tanya asked Sam, treating Ethan like a mannequin that couldn't speak.
