“You’ll learn to flip it,” Claire said softly, finally speaking up. “It’s a distinct mannerism, Elena. Girls with long hair move differently. They have to sweep it back, tilt their heads. It’s the best disguise.”

“See? Listen to your coach,” Sam smirked.

Tanya began the painstaking process of gluing the long, silky wefts of hair onto Ethan’s barely-there roots. It felt heavy. Unnaturally heavy. With every row she attached, Ethan felt his head being pulled backward.

This isn’t coming off tonight, he realized with a sinking horror. I’m going to have to sleep with this. Shower with this. Wake up and see this.

“By the way, princess,” Sam chimed casually, as if mentioning the weather, “after we finish this luscious blondification, we’re doing nail extensions today. Long ones. The kind that click when you type. Not just nails. We’ve got a whole checklist. Brows, lashes refill, maybe a little shimmer spray… We’ll make you the girliest girl in the entire lab. If you’re undercover, you better sell it.”

Ethan inhaled sharply, then deadpanned in a perfectly serious voice, “Sure, Sam. Why stop at nail extensions? Maybe I should just get a tramp stamp tattoo on my lower back while we’re at it.”

“Elena!” Claire sputtered, brows jumping almost into her hairline.
