“But do I look like a….?” he pressed, staring at the pink lips in the mirror. “Be honest. If you saw me on the street, would you think ‘there goes a smart girl,’ or would you think ‘I bet she uses the word literally in every sentence’?”

Sam leaned in, resting his chin on Ethan’s shoulder, their faces side-by-side in the glass.

“They’re going to think,” Sam whispered, “that you are the prettiest, sweetest, most harmless girl in the building. And that is exactly what we need.”

Ethan swallowed hard. He looked at the 4-inch heels on his feet, the blonde curtain of hair around his face, and the glossy pout of his lips. He realized with a sinking heart that he didn't just look the part. He felt it. He felt the IQ dropping out of the room. He felt the urge to fix his hair, to check his teeth, to giggle nervously.

The disguise was working too well. It’s total erasure. If I walked out there right now and screamed I was a man, nobody would believe me. I’d have to physically fight just to prove I’m Ethan. And… god help me, but there’s a relief in that. I’m safe. I’m buried so deep under this flawless disguise that no one will ever find me.

“Fine,” Ethan whispered, his voice soft and breathless, matching the face in the mirror. “Let’s go. Before I change my mind.”

“That’s my girl,” Sam grilled. “Now, stand up. And remember—lead with the hips.”
