The Optimization update is here!

New additions:

2 new tracks (Shape fight theme, Night dome battle theme)

A new File select screen (also by Mason!)

A copy file feature

Greatly optimized saves

An autosave system

Persistent Traveler countdown across areas (= more frequent traveler encounters)

A Linux version!!!

This is for the most part a port of the whole game from GameMaker 1.4 to GameMaker 2. If you encountered these issues before, they should be no more:

Sudden crashes (especially when entering the Biscotti tunnels or during the Angel fight, but at various other points in the game too)

Cursor drifting if not getting stuck in a corner

Selecting a character in the chara select menu would cause a small freeze (generally loading anything would take a long time)

The D3DXCompile title screen crash

Known issues:

With the save system having been greatly optimized, saves from the previous version are only almost compatible. That is, you might see some weird behavior or even crashes if you try to access alchemy recipes from an older save.

If you notice a delay when moving the cursor, try increasing your monitor's refresh rate (or decreasing it, this has also worked in one case for some reason...!). This is a fun quirk of GM2, currently doing my best to fix this...!Edit: This is a known GM issue, sadly the best known fixes currently are either what I said above, or pressing F1 which will unlock the mouse from the game window. Doing so can unlock the mouse in some sequences where this isn't intended, but it's not a huge problem.

Tabbing out then back in might cause the game to show an infinite loading screen, possibly a GameMaker issueEdit: This is a known GM issue! Temporary fix if this happens to you: Press F6 to toggle windowed mode on/off

One step at a time, things are moving forward...!Thank you so much for the support everyone ^^

(BE Witches.zip for windows, BE Witches.AppImage for Linux! ^^)

edit 01: Fixed a crash when to talking to Sevii, and when talking to Sevii + Avni (Windows only for now, the Linux version will be updated a bit less frequently, sorry...!)

edit 02: Fixed a crash that can occur during fights if an oyon is selected precisely during the frame it falls then selected again, prevented autosave from triggering during a specific sequence

edit 03: Fixed a couple more bugs and made it so pressing F6 toggles windowed mode even without debug bug since it can be used to fix the frozen screen when tabbing back in bug. Also confirmed that several of the current known bugs are on GameMaker's side, which isn't too great... Considering declaring this update a Beta and only releasing it on Itch on December 1st while also keeping the older versions up.The Linux version update should be up sometime in the next few days!

edit 04: The Linux version has been updated!Unless more fixable bugs are found, this will be the last update before some time

edit 05: Woops! The Linux version didn't actually get updated last time. It's here for good now! Also, some new bugs have been found, so expect more updates next week...!

edit 06: More bugfixes! Both the Windows and Linux version have been updated.- Moving into a room by using the keyboard in the same frame as a grabbed object is released caused a crash > Fixed!- Using Boomerang (Alt Y) on Nightmare crashes the game > Fixed!- Also, the price of Terra's incense has been lowered

edit 07:- Updated the intro screen- Fixed the Traveler despawn bug- Mines (Mines Heartpower) are now bumped by using right click instead of left click- Slightly decreased the hitstun length when destroying a Shape- Increased the amount of storage pages to 20- Storage pages can now be flipped using the keyboard- Optimized BGM loading (greatly decreased memory usage and almost instant loading time at the start of the game!)- Various minor bug fixes & changes

edit 08:- Fixed a bug where the Sablee BGM would stop playing

edit 09:- Fixed a crash occurring when losing during a certain segment involving Vestia in some circumstances

edit 10:- Fixed a crash occurring when pausing the game during fights and special sequences

edit 11:- Fixed the Boomerang spell not healing

edit 12 (15-06-2026):This is a good one! The new version of GameMaker I was waiting for, LTS 2026, is now out, and as far as testing goes the main issues mentioned above are now gone! I also did a bunch of minor fixes and improvements:

Fixed a bug that would cause a crash when walking out of a room right after smashing a constellation in the Night dome

Charging a heartpower mine then Witch swapping into a different heartpower without releasing the bomb will cause the aim cross to stay active forever > fixed

Pressing M now opens the map

Lidze can now pass as a normal chest even if sneak mode is activated

The first cutscene plays music when it shouldn't > fixed

Sneak mode is now automatically disabled when entering a non fight area

Lowering difficulty now also lowers opponent's casting and summoning speed, down to 75% of the normal speed at 0.5 difficulty (increasing difficulty doesn't increase speed)

Fixed dialogue box height for various objects

Improved the room editor

Minor fixes in various rooms

Auria interactable clouds now have 3 HP instead of 4 and shrink after -losing HP

Slightly edited an Auria puzzle

Biscotti tunnel foreground walls now look better during room transitions

Fixed Goblin's chibi hitbox

Overkill now work as a graduation: at -25% HP, 100% chance to get the soul. At -12.5%HP (halfway to full overkill), 50% chance to get the soul, etc. So it's possible to get a soul by being lucky, getting a full overkill simply guarantees it!

Swatter Heartpower buff: The swatter and insect now "follow" the heart on an axis, and will always meet at the heart rather than at the spot the heart was at when they were summoned

Fixed a few typos / Minor text improvements

Minor result screen chibis improvements when selecting My Turn

Added more floor plaques for Auria tower

Fixed the two Cookie & Milk signs (malformed / wrong letters)

Added a setting to set autosave frequency (off by default)

Autosaves can now be triggered from the "return to title screen" menu

Improved a few SFX volumes

Fixed the Wind SFX not playing in some cutscenes

Made it so Lidze can't instantly spawn right after entering the Rietti forest

Fixed a bug causing the Sablee ocean BG fish being seen spawning/despawning near the edges of the screen in some rooms

This update will become public on July 1st (Unless some big issue arises, but that's unlikely!)

edit 13:

Fixed an Overkill related bug

Woo new update! Alas, I can already report a bug: On a new File - The game crashes during the dialogue with the lady on the distant island in sablee. EDIT: Seems to be more common. The same thing happens when talking to the two ladies one area to the east of the confetti game. The error code reads: ERROR in action number 1 of Other Event: User Defined 2 for object obj_DialogueManagerExploration: DoAdd :2: Malformed variable at gml_Object_obj_DialogueManagerExploration_Other_12 ############################################################################################ gml_Object_obj_DialogueManagerExploration_Other_12 (line -1) gml_Object_obj_DialogueBox_Step_0 (line -1)

Nosebecc

Shoot! Thank you! Looking at the code again, I'm not sure how it even worked in the past...! I'll have the fix uploaded in just a bit ^^

Archduke Doggo

Thanks for the Linux version Nose, not very fun running through Proton sometimes, also very based to not use flatpak (don't) and going for the far better appimage launcher much appreciated!

WyattMeyer

I posted this in the Discord chat, but I'll leave it here so others are warned: When you alt tab and come back, there is a 0.5 second freeze. Sometimes the "LOADING!" screen will pop up during this freeze and never go away, hardlocking the game. Avoid alt tabbing whenever possible for now.

Hichten

Thanks for the quick fix!

Nosebecc

It's mainly thanks to Mason! I've wanted to do this for a while but had some difficulties with it. You're very welcome ^^

Nosebecc

Thank you! I added it as a Known issue as well ^^

Ran

Thanks for the Linux version btw. Was fully expecting to have to use Proton or Wine for this one.

im new to the game, i discovered it yesterday, and it is one of the best games ive found in my venerable career (joking) in playing pervert games. up to a certain point. i am now at a point where random encounters are so frequent, so lengthy, and so overwhelmingly hard to process visually that i am *dreading* them. every time i trigger a random encounter in this area i hope its a Zombie and not an Imp, because if its an Imp, i better pray it isnt in the way of getting out. if it is... i guess its a game over for me. if there was a way to turn down, slow down, or otherwise weaken the Shapes during encounters without it costing me an arm and a leg or a spell slot, this game would legitimately be perfect to me. unless im missing something, im currently not really seeing the vision in having me aggressive micromanage the combine-colours gameplay, try and squash the hazards in the grid itself, AND manage the Shapes, all while trying not to die and trying to be optimal.

Nosebecc

First of all thank you very much! ^^ I've been told similar things by others. I'm not only planning to rethink the overall balance in the next big update, but I've also been thinking about adding a different difficulty setting specifically for Shapes! Additionally, I'd like t make it so swapping characters damages all present shapes. I can share a few tricks though: - Each enemy can only summon a set amount of shapes at once (with a few exceptions, when Shapes are summoned through spells like with Kitsune's Overcurse). If you can determine which shape isn't an active threat while you're busy with the grid, leaving these alive will essentially make it safer to focus on the grid! - Choosing your battles is ok. You can run away from a battle by going in the opposite direction you came from while exploring! It's possible to avoid battle by estimating in how many steps the next one will appear and walking backwards at the right time. Coupled with toggling Sneak mode (which lowers the encounter rate) on/off at the right time, you can avoid a lot of fights you don't like until you're higher level! - Have you tried other characters than Vuu? Rose's Heartpower is short range, but very good for quickly dispatching Shapes. T's charged Heartpower results in a big AOE, and her unique skill can damage shapes too - Don't hesitate to swap characters mid fight, it's essentially a small free heal! You get one extra swap every time you refill the grid - The Blob heart relic is very helpful against Shapes. You can find it in the Biscotti tunnels, inside the yellow mushroom house. - I recommend always having a Terra's incense in your inventory to escape if needed! You can buy them at the Biscotti general store. - If you need it, don't hesitate to use the difficulty setting or the walkthrough: https://www.patreon.com/posts/119207938 That's all I got! The tunnels are a definitely a jump in difficulty currently, sorry about that...!

Rye Whiskey

thank you for your reply, and you're good! game design is hard! this is still an incredibly fun game and despite the frustration im pushing through SO HARD. i do want to say that Terra's Incense is really expensive, especially when i lose so much money upon a game over state, so i've just been quitting to menu when i get locked in/out of somewhere. might want to rethink that. i did end up managing to get on top of it eventually!

Nosebecc

Oh nice! And yeah that's fair, some prices (and even item selections) will need to be rethought a bit. Hadn't really considered that the new autosaves kinda made the incense irrelevant, hmm... I'll think about it ^^ Thanks again!

Copycat

is the latest update only for linux with no changes for windows from the one before? i still got the version from the 3rd edit and wanna confirm if it is the same for windows or should i update?

Nosebecc

If you have the version from the 3rd edit for Windows, you're good! The 4th edit was only for bringing the Linux version up to speed ^^

Getting an ERROR when talking to Sevii. ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event0 for object obj_DialogueManagerExploration: DoAdd :2: Malformed variable at gml_Object_obj_DialogueManagerExloration_Step_0. Just started playing. This game is such a vibe. Love the music and the art style. The opening areas are great. I know it's been in all the demos but there is so much hidden it a blast. It's a great game with some great tits. :D Did have one question. I've been noticing a small icon pop on the top right of the screen. Maybe I didn't read something but I was wondering what that was. Edit: I am having another bug. It wasn't really causing to much of an issue but I'm noticing it in the mini games and it is somewhat annoying. It seems to be something with the mouse calibration. When I switch screens (Go to the backpack or another UI screen.) My mouse will move really choppy then slow then it will be fine again. It doesn't seem like it's game lag or anything like that but I think it's something with the mouse re-calibrating on each screen. Idk if you can add an option to make that manual (So you click a button to calibrate an it doesn't do it other wise) or if you know why that would be happening. I am on Linux using Wayland and KDE plasma so not sure if that would be causing it. But it's very odd.

Nosebecc

Thank you! I'm glad you like it ^^ Just to make sure, when did you download the demo? I've been fixing some of these bugs over the week, that first one should be no more in the latest build! You could try downloading the Linux version again. Still just to be safe, which character is it that is crashing the game when talked to? Feel free to post a screenshot if you prefer ^^ That small icon indicates an autosave just happened! I'll introduce it properly in the future As for that cursor bug I actually did mention it in the post, let me copy paste that... "If you notice a delay when moving the cursor, try increasing your monitor's refresh rate (or decreasing it, this has also worked in one case for some reason...!). This is a fun quirk of GM2, currently doing my best to fix this...! Edit: This is a known GM issue, sadly the best known fixes currently are either what I said above, or pressing F1 which will unlock the mouse from the game window." I'm especially annoyed at this one myself given there isn't much I can do right now... Though it is good to know it can also trigger on Linux, thank you for telling me...! I hope these temporary cursor fixes work for you!

Ran

Thanks for the replay. I took can send some screen shots. I'll send it to the discord. I downloaded the appimage from this post and just checked the SHA1 to the version I was playing and they match. So it is the same file.

Nosebecc

Thank you very much! I'll go check right now. But damn, did I mess up when uploading the new file maybe...? And I'm not home currently so I can't do it right now either. I'll check asap once I get back, sorry...!

Nathan Connolly

Okay encounterd another bug during the angel encounter was that taken care of.When yuu is saved from the angel the gamemaker crashes at some point during corridor run.Where vestina slung yuu over the shoulder. Will get a screen shot and DM it to you. Basically it happens if you die.

Nosebecc

Thanks a lot, I'll look into it asap!

Mark G

How do you enable cheats on the Linux version?

FakeSpotter

I've got another Angel bug that seems to occur simply if the game is paused during the fight. This is the error message I got: ___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event2 for object obj_BGMManager: Unable to find instance for object index 1413 at gml_Object_obj_BGMManager_Step_2 ############################################################################################ gml_Object_obj_BGMManager_Step_2 (line -1)

Nosebecc

Thank you for reporting this! But that's weird, I can't seem to reproduce it... Does it crash as soon as you pause, every time? Is it during the 1st or 2nd phase? Are you on Windows? And, just to make sure, do you have the most recent version of the game?

FakeSpotter

I'm on the most recent version of the game. I've had the game crash on the second phase, then the first phase (I paused both times because my dog wanted attention), and I am on Windows. I'll try it out more on my end to see if it happens again, and what happened right up until that point. I know I was close to beating the first phase of the angel the second time it crashed.

Nosebecc

Huh, it doesn't sound like anything too special happened... Thank you, I'll also do more testing then!

Red Tiger

I would like to see a android version of the game, if possible, would be cool if this game could be taken in the go, crazy suggestion

Nosebecc

Sorry, I don't have any plans for a mobile version currently Never say never I suppose, but no promise there...!

RogueShadow

Pleased to confirm that the newest build does in fact fix the mouse stutter.

Nosebecc

Aw heck yeah, thank you for letting me know! ^^

Nathan Connolly

Yay a linux version now I dont have to run it in play on linux.Sure daddy steam will be very happy.

Nathan Connolly

Oh btw is it possible that the captured souls fgail to expand size of pixel characters cannoit seem to use them. Also very stuck on the forest puzzle traingle puzzle.

Nathan Connolly

AHH okay thought they did something there was some item mentioned in the tutorial that expands the chi is size... As for the triangle puzzle could not find the right symbol triangle in the forest ruins. One particular rotating triangle is hard to find.
