Ted is right, doctors and lawyers SHOULD be upper middle class. They range from middle to lower-upper class. True upper class is CEO/generational wealth territory. People who try to argue that a doctor making $120,000 is true upper are also people who don't realize that they probably grew up lower class, not middle class. But all in all, it's a broken system. But the widening wealth gaps make discussions about the definitions of middle class difficult

This is always interesting to me because, while you're right here--120k/year should be considered upper middle class at most (though doctors and lawyers both, so long as it's not a public position, make significantly more money than that)--people at both ends of the spectrum tend to skew toward viewing themselves as middle class, because in most cases, their lifestyles aren't radically different from the other people they grow up around, so they assume it's normal. As a result there are also a lot of people in the upper-middle class or lower-upper class segment of the population that see themselves as true middle class, which is just kind of an interesting exercise in self-perception.

As a British/Irish person listing to people in the US talk about class is wild. Incredibly overgeneralised rule of thumb: Working class means you work with your hands, middle class works with their mind, upper class you need a title and you probably don’t work at all. How much money you actually have varies a lot and is not consistent with a specific class.

fwiw class is labelled differently in America because American upper class doesn't have any direct connection to aristocracy/nobility, so class as a label is more about personal wealth than association with a particular level of sophistication. Even the most "old money" upper class people in America are probably just heirs to a fortune from a Rockefeller or Vanderbilt or whatever, meaning they're a descendant of some industrialist. New money upper class people are like celebrities or CEOs or various finance/banking dickheads.

My unofficial guide to determine whether you grew up upper/middle/lower class: Upper class: when your parents weren't around, they paid a professional nanny/au pair/governess to watch over you and your siblings Middle class: when your parents weren't around, they paid some random 14-year-old girl down the street to babysit you and your siblings Lower class: when your parents weren't around, they couldn't afford to pay anybody so either nobody watched you or they had to call in an auntie/grandma

Idk what qts talking about I grew up similar situation with food stamps, free lunch, buying cloths from thrift stores or good will and we always had lunch meat. There where these small packs you could get for a dollar and we'd grab a couple and eat sandwiches for every meal.
