Ellie Remotigue

lud's right. as a full time author, when i'm drafting, i'm writing 5 hours every day (m-f) and i write 10k words/day. and that's not even to mention all the revisions/editing that goes into it next.

I miss qt hope she’s doing well ❤️

Fox

sending all my love to qt<3 I'm really impressed with how Rae's kept the podcast running through such a hard time and all the fills who've stepped up. friends or co-workers it's obvious you guys care about each other and it's very sweet

I think the audiobook thing is sort of misleading.. like yeah it activates/stimulates the same part of the brain, but it doesn't make you any better at reading.... which is what actual reading would do. I'm not an audio book hater btw!!

Byron

Ludwig is right humanities main advantage over the rest of the animal kingdom is our ability to throw and catch

For me, an audio book would fill my brain too much to be able to create imagery in my head of the words I’m reading. But I think everyone’s brain chem is diff. Everyone enjoying lit is lit

anythingflying

imo audio books are less impactful than direct reading, but I still glean most of the same general information. So for anything other than school, that’s plenty. But listening to someone’s thoughts and reactions on a stream is much different than a concisely thought out and written dialogue.

As Filipino, we love. So happy she tries and so happy when she brings it up 🇵🇭

brownie

19:40 rae absolutely should make a beat on stream! i’d love to see what she comes up with :D

brownie

20:35 also! there’s a song, “dove” by antihoney, that uses the exact chords lud is talking about so i think they can be sad chords if u use em right

I have the helmet used by Burt Munro while he drove his Indian. He is the inspiration behind the movie the world's fastest Indian.

If your listening to an audio book you are still listening to well written literature not quite the same as listening to someone stream and tap about something with les context or coherent thought out writing

DeftCG

31:20 this isn't true, it's an article misinterpreting a study, they aren't the same, and that's okay. Listening still engages many of the same areas in listeners who picture the words, which is what the study said, but that's a world away from it being the same thing in terms of what happens in the brain, which processes are involved, etc. But no one should seriously be trying to get clout for either method of consuming written works.

I don’t know if Rae will read this comment but as a reader and writer, I want to mention that I consider listening to audio book as reading. It’s like the book is being read out to you, you know. It’s just that you’re using your hearing sense to consume the book instead of your vision. Like if you can’t see well but are “watching” a movie with audio descriptions. Listening to Ryan’s stream is not listening to an audio book because that’s a stream, not a book. You don’t need to be insecure about reading. I’ve seen many readers and writers embrace ebooks and audio books. The people who say only reading from a physical book counts are a little elitist, if I’m being real.

inflatablepenguin

on the audio book subject; its only similar to reading if you are ACTIVELY listening. I take that to mean sitting/laying down and focusing on the story being read. I do most of my audiobook listening while I'm doing chores or driving so I can only really listen to things I've physically read before or else I miss so much of the story. This is because, especially when driving, I focus on the task at hand and dont hear the story. When audiobooks and kindles started getting really popular I remember there was a study at the time about the difference between the tactile sensation of turning a page and the way your brain remembers things. Having the olfactory of the smell of the book and the tactile feel of the pages, even the little stain from where you dripped some coffee on page 33, helps your brain remember the contents of the book by giving you extra sensory memories of where you were and what you did when you read something. tl;dr if you're ADHD as fuck like me audiobooks are great for listening to old favourites but can be hard to focus on properly to actually retain information the same way you can with a book.

Valkyrae is reading DCC?! Awesome!! Welcome to the Crawl! She should absolutely listen to the audiobook. It's amazing.

DougRaw

Gaming, call in confessions, wya?

Emily Burkholder

Rae, if you own the audiobook and ebook on kindle, it will play the audio, while highlighting the words on the page. I do this sometimes when I just want to be a couch potato and listen to my audiobook, while also having something to look at!

Kriptyk

You don’t get shamed for listening to audio books, you get shamed for saying you read that book

Treyden Talbot

I think Ludwig should also invite Ina Yu when Li comes. she's funny and she can interpret
